B. T. LITTLEFIELDS TURF TRIUMPHS Saddled Five Winners of the Kings Plato for President of the Ontario Jockey Club. Toronto, Ont., December 29. The recent announcement that B. T. Littlefield had severed his connection with the stable of Joseph E. Seagram, president of the Ontario Jockey Club, brought to an end an efficient and faithful service of fifteen years, interspersed witii many notable triumphs on the Canadian turf. I Littlefield Is one of the best-known trainers on the American turf. His quiet, courteous and un assuming manner made him popular with all with whom he came In contact. A natural born horseman is Littlefield and lie lias devoted his lifetime to the noble animal. Following in the footsteps of his father, Charles Littlefield, he commenced at , a jockey and developed into one of the most skillet 1 trainers in the business. It was in September, 1902, that the name of B. T. Littlefield first appeared on the program as the trainer for Mr. Seagram. Since that time he has met with much success with his horses. Inferno was the first winner of the Kings Plate saddled by trainer Littlefield for Mr. Seagram in 1905. He repeated witii Slaughter the following year and two years later with Seismic. The success of Seismic marked the thirteenth victory in the Plate race for the AVaterloo owner. After this a hoodoo seemed to follow the stable in the matter of Plate material, for several years. The "jinx" was broken with a vengeance at the May meeting last year at Woodbine, when the Seagram horses Mandarin, Gala Water and Gala Day, finished one, two, three in the race for the coveted trophy. WON THIS YEARS KINGS PLATE. Again this year the winner of the Kings Guinpas was saddled by trainer Littlefield in Belle Ma-hone. This marked only the second success for a three-year-old filly in the big race in twenty years, but the fifth Kings Plate winner trained by Mr. Littlefield for his employer. Other notable victories of the Seagram horses while Barry was the chief pilot of the stable were the winning of the King Edward Hotel Gold hip, three times with Inferno, and also the Queens Hotel Cup, once each with Inferno, Deuce and Roquet. Both of these trophies thus iK-eame the property of Mr. Seagram and are much prized by their owner. Under the careful handling of trainer Littlefield. Inferno developed Into probably the best horse ever bred in Canada. He won the ,000 Toronto hip, running the one and one-eighth miles in 1:52. This feat no other Canadian-bred horse has even accomplished. The frequent victories of the Seagram horses in the Breeders, the Coronation, the Maple Leaf and other big stakes in recent years have made the black jacket and yellow sash famous. During the past two years the Seagram stable has headed the list of Canadian winning owners with 4,475 in 1910 and 2,305 this year. Barry commenced his career on the turf as a rider for his father. About 1890, with his brother Fred, he became connected with the stable of .1. B. Hag-gin, for whom he rode for a few years. Although still young. Barry eventually embarked in the roll of trainer for Mr. Haggin. lie remained with Ilng-gln until accepting the position as trainer for Mr. Seagram. Honestly did Barry Littlefield come by his love for a horse. His father was an extensive owner for many years, part of which time he was in partnership with Charles Boyle of Woodstock. Mr. Littlefield. Sr., also was a noted jockey. In 1S0O he rode the winner of the first Queefis Plate, Don Juan. Again in 1S62 lie piloted Palermo to victory in the most noted fixture of the Canadian turf.
