TURF GOSSIP FROM EASTERN COURSES New York, December 29. Captain J. E. Davis will have to engage another rider for his jumpers next year, as A. Nicklaus lias joined the army. The colors of William Littauer will be seen at the Hunt meetings next spring. He is the owner of a promising three-year-old whicli will be raced on the flat during the early summer, then schooled for stecplecliasing, in preparation for the Ilarlwr Hill Cup, which is run each autumn at Piping Rock. Jerry Carroll has eight jumpers under his care, the property of W. R. Coe. William Lincoln. Crosby of Boston, who has been a patron of the Hunt meetings for a number of years, and whose colors have been seen on Precise, Runway and several others, has gone in for breeding on a small scale. D. Raymond, who is one of the keenest of Canadas steeplechasing devotees, is making a number of additions to the stable he will race next year. Frank Riggs has been elected a director of the Marvland Jockey Club, taking the place of C. Carroll Poultney, who is retiring from active business. The new director will also officiate as assistant secretary, devoting his time as aid to his brother, William P. Riggs, secretary of the club. Careful investigation shows there is going to be a great dearth of steeplechase riders next year, as most of the better class have enlisted or gone in the draft army. This, of course, applies to the younger element, and owners are preparing to make the best of conditions by engaging some of the old-timers.
