RECENT ARRIVALS AT HAVRE DE GRACE Include Many from New York Courses — Whitneys Benning String Now in Quarters. Havre de Grace. Md.. April fi. — About 400 of tlie horses that will take part in the spring rn *- meeting of the Harford Agricultural and Breeder* Association have arrived at Havre de Grace and taken up their quarters at the track. They are coming in slowly, a carload or so at a time, instead of hy trains. Transportation is extremely difficult to obtain because of the imperative demands of war. The trainers of the great stables club together an-l make partial shipments every day or so from New York. However, the s"0 stalls within the track inclosure will all be tenanted before the middle of the month and every farmer within five miles, in any direction of the track, will have a thoroughbred tenant or so in his bam. The horses that have put in an appearance In the course of the last ten days are from New York mostly, although a few have arrived from Benning and Bowie. New Yorks most ini|iortaiit contributions to the Havre de Grace colony are parts of the stables of F. D. Weir. H. C. Applegate. V. E. Ap-plegate. Richard T. Wilson and Gifford A. Cochran. Bughouse, a stake winner of last year anil prospective Wilmington and Preakness Stakes candidate, and the four-year-old Philippic are the best-known memliers of the Cochran hand here. With them came tin- two-year-olds Gas Mask. Toombeoln. Penard. St. Qiientin and Baglnera. tins Mask, a bay son of Ormondale — Veil. :ind Toom-beoln. a brown son of His Majesty — Conneniara. are youngsters of high promise. Quite likely they " will be seen at the post in the Alierdcen Stakes. They ■ire ready for the colors. William Midgeley. who brought the Cochran horses down, said that some • if his other horses would follow later on. JACK BARE JR. PROMINENT ARRIVAL. Jack Hare Jr.. one of the best two-year-olds of last year, is the most distinguished member of the Weir-Applegate string. His first start at Havre de Grace, if the plans of trainer Weir do not miscarry, will be in the Wilmington, and after that race is rim. he will train for the Preakness. With lack Hare Jr.. Weir has brought Hendrie. King Worth. Starter. Golden Glow. Helen Atkin. Fort Bliss. Brisk. Dick Richardson. Helen C. etc. Weirs horses are pretty well advanced and they will be galloping their best in a few days. The going at the Havre de Grace track has liccn improved by recent showers and the horses here are doing splendidly. Only four of the runners that will bear the silks of Mr. Wilson through the Havre de Grace meeting came down with this weeks shipment. These were the Veteran Prairie and tin- two-year-olds Quickstep. Thistledown and Littlecote. The other members of the string will he along later, for Mr. Wilson has engaged stalls for thirty. Campfire. the prospective Wilson candidate for the Pimlico Spring Handicap and for the great races to lie run about New York later on. will he in the second shipment, as will Priam. Straight Forward, Whip-lioorwill. Woodt brush and others.. The strongest stable from Benning that lias put in an appearance so far is the Simons division of the big establishment of Harry Payne Whitney. Simons has brought a dozen good two-year-olds and a couple of maidens, belonging to Mr. Whitney. As already related in these dispatches. Simons two-year-olds, which were among the most forward at Benning three weeks ago, were prevented from taking part in the Bowie meeting by an epidemic of catarrhal fever. They are now. happily, over their sickness. Simons expects re-enforcements from Brookdale Farm in the course of next week or ten days, a dozen runners of the big division of the Whitney string having been named for Havre de Grace stakes by James Rowe.
