H. RITES GOING TO HAVRE DE GRACE Will Take Ballast and Amackassin to Train for Their Early Stake Engagements. Baltimore. Md.. April 6. — Harry Rites has despaired ,f setting a race that will suit either of J. E. Griffiths three year old. ISallast and Amackassin. at Bowie, and he will ship to Havre de Grace early next week. These colts are the pros-pective candidates of Mr. Griffith, who is a mem-lK-r of the Baltimore County Racing Commission and one of th" leading sup|iortcrs of racing in Maryland, fur the Preakness Stakes, and Isith are extensively engaged at Havre de Grace. Ballast won four race-, finished second six times and third thre- times out of nineteen starts last year and is training in promising fashion this year. Ballast is a colt of robust IhmIv and uniform muscular development and he acts as though he might maintain Mi fine turn of speed over a long distance of ground. Kites thinks well of Amarkassiu, which mead fairly well last ycnr and has trained so satisfactorily litis spring that Kites will start him in the Harford Handicap on the opening day at Havre de Grace. Griffith has a couple of platers and a promising jum|wr or so to bring to Havre de Grace with Ballast and Amackassin. Kites i- the most ardent rooter in Maryland for Sun Briar, the pros|tective favorite for the coming Kentucky Derby. Sun Briar was turned over to Uit« - to be taught the A. B. Cs of racing a year ago last slimmer and the Maryland trainer broke him at Laurel Park in Octolior. "Because Sun Briar hap|M nod to win most of his good races in muddy going at Saratoga last summer." Kites said today, "most horsemen and horse folk in the east have a notion that he will not run his race except in heavy going. It would Is- unwise to bet that this colt will not extend himself on a fast track. however. Twice lie worked a quarter in 1*J sec-ouds fiat for no .it I-iiirel Park when the going was like asphalt and he did not turn a hair. 1 believe that be will extend himself on any sort of track, in spite of hi- ringbones: also that he will K„ any distance in spite of his sprinting |iedigree. Sun Briar is a colt of |icrfect action ami lie has the disposition of a first -class race horse."
