RED CROSS STAKES ARE SUGGESTED Kentucky Breeders Ask Racing Association to Offer Such an Event for 1919 or 1920. Lexington. Ky.. April 5. — In furtherance of the plans of the breeders of thoroughbred horses to make their contributions to the 00,000 pledged to the American Red Cross Association, to be paid this year through the Kentucky State Racing Commission, the following letter, signed by Messrs. A. B. Hancock. J. O.. Keene and Hal Price Headley, as a committee of breeders, was sent out to all racing associations this week: "At a recent meeting of horsemen held in Lexington. Hal Price Headley . suggested that, as a means of further assisting our country and its lilies to win the war now being waged for world democracy, the thoroughbred horse breeders of America lie requested to donate one or more yearlings each for a sale to be conducted without charge by the Fasig-Tipton Company at Saratoga, and with the understanding that the gross proceeds from such sale tie contributed to the American Red Cross Association. "A committee was appointed to work out the ile-tails of the plan and to" take subscriptions of yearlings. This committee believes that if the various racing associations throughout the country will be so liberal as to, give stakes to be decided in 1919 or 1920 and to be confined to yearlings bought out of this sale, it will greatly enhance their value and cause lively bidding by sportsmen. This, naturally, would mean more money for the Red Cross and it would create a more friendly feeling in many quarters, especially among the foremost ladies of the country toward racing. "We are asking all of the racing associations in America to offer a race to lie known as the Red Cross Stakes, to which there shall lie no entram-e fee and to which only horses sold in the Red Cross yearling sale of 1918 shall be eligible, the certification of the sales company of a list of the yearlings so sold to constitute the list of entries to such stakes. "We feel quite sure that at least forty yearlings will be donated for this sale and unless that nuui-lier or more is represented, we will not expect th«-associations to offer the stakes. Kindly let us know at your earliest convenience how you feel toward the proposal and whether or not your association will give such a stake and. if so. what sum your association will add to the Bel Cross Stakes."
