t f DISAPPOINTING STABLE RETURNS TO AN OWNER WHO DESERVED BETTER FORTUNE IN LAST YEARS RACING | •*— ■ -+ If Mr. W. IS. C«e*s wholesale purchase of the Sledmere yearlings last year brings its appropriate reward in our two-year-old racing of 1918, it is more than probable that his stable returns will greatly exceed those of 1917. Kxcept in the held of steeplechasing he was anything but a lucky owner last year. Kight of the twelve horses raced by him were well-bred English thoroughbreds, but only two of them, the three-year-old Wonderful and the two-year-old Nutcracker, proved able to win a race. Naturally, there was" considerable disapiaiintmcut involved in the failure of these foreigners, but some of Nutcrackers racing was sufficiently meritorious to justify the hope that he may prove a good three-year-old. His close third to Papp and Drastic in the Initcd States Hotel Stakes at Saratoga, with Sun Briar and Kscoba included in the thirteen which finished behind him. was a feat to be kept in mind. In Town Hall Mr. Coe possessed the best three-year-old jumper in the country and his stable-mate. Gold Bond, was not far behind him in promise. Town Hall led in money winning, and the filly. Bet. also a juui|ier. was second to him in that agreeable feature of racing, .lacoba won a couple of races, but did not race up to the high promise of her previous years. Yet she went amiss early in the racing year, else she might have shown to better advantage. In all the record of the stable was: Horse. Col. and Sex. A. Pedigree. 1st. 2d. 3d. Won.
