WAR CLOUD IN GOOD WORK ♦ Jennings Sends Macomber Derby Hope 1 1-8 Miles in 1:59. * Lucullite Will Be Sent to Pimlico Track for Preakness if He Is Fit and Ready. • New York. April 17. — War Cloud, tin- Kentucky Derby andidatc from tin- stable of A. K. Macom l»r. was given : good work-out this morning by liis trainer. Waller Jennings. Buxton was in the saddle iind was told to send hiin alone steadily for a mile and an eighth. War Cloud went the first half in ." «»-.-. under restraint, the three-quarters in 1:17*;. tlie mile in 1:45 and finished out one mile and an eighth in l:r 9. going splendidly at the close. It is «.ii" of the best work-outs the Derby candidate has had and shows the steady methods employed by his 11. liner. The horse is in excellent condition and fit for a nun h greater effort at any time. If he goes on at this rate he will be in grand condition by May 11. the date of the big race. Mr. Jennings is doing slow and methodical work with all his horses. Suubonnet. probably the best three -year -old filly out last year, looks mighty 1-altiiy. She roni|ied three -quarters in 1:20. and Stargaaer. another useful handicap horse in the Ma -«niber burn, put in a good mile in 1:4 5. Others in Jennings string did slow work. The two-year-olds are all being educated at the barrier, breaking from the half-mile post up the chute and finishing :it the st-ind. They came down the straight course in about 51 or 52 seconds, none of them being pressed t the limit. Ik-sides preparing his two stars Lucullite and Hoiirless. Sam Hildreth is giving others in the Kel-itwnt «t«M * fl:;if«»rtn and earefui preparation. Masda and Jyntee are geiting ready for early engagements, judging by their work. They are galloping miles iu ulxnit 1 :49 in an impressive fashion. Although Lucullite nor Hourless did nothing outside of light work today, both are coming along well. Speaking of the Preakness. Mr. Hildreth said it was not a soft s|H t for any horse and traveling lxing so bad would not help any of the late ship-l«crs. While Mr. Belmonts trainer has engaged a number of stalls at Pimlico. the chances are he will not occupy all of them. He is averse to ship-ling horses for short meetings .nil avoids it as much as iK.ssihle. If he does send Lucullite for the Preakness. he will be reasonably sure, in his opinion, that the horse will give a good mount of himself. Mr. Itelmont leaves the management of his horses entirely in the hands of his trainer. "There are many rich three-year-old races to be decided this year," says Hildreth, "and even if Lucullite should not go in the Preakness. he will be rescued for some of the events closer to home. Id hate to send him all the way to Baltimore and lave him beateu. but if he shows anything like winning form iu his work. I guess hell be on hand." a
