4. . _ J, RECORD OF THE LEADING STEEPLECHASE JOCKEYS IN AMERICA FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS + ■ i W. Allen did not meet with his accustomed measure of success as a steeplechase rider last year, his score of races won being his lowest in the last decade. Still he has no superior in his profession and leads all competitors in number of races won and in total of money won by his mounts. Possibly both P. Williams and J. Kermath would be pressing him closely had they been iu active riding each of the last ten years, as Allen was. but 1912 and 1913 were blanks for Williams and Kermath rode in but seven of the ten years. F. Williams rode twenty -eight winners in 1915. which is the record for any one of the ten years. Xot far behind this mark D. Mi Kinney had twenty-seven in 1908 and W. Allen the same number in 1912. Nothing like these records appeared in last years cross-country racing, V. Powers leading with fifteen wins to B. Haynes fourteen. Many who were riding the jumpers ten years ago have abandoned their dangerous calling, of whom none was better than Nat Bay, but their places have been taken by later developments of skill and our best steeplechase riders of today compare favorably with those of any former iieriod. The following interesting table gives the records of those who since 1907 have ridden ten or more winnsrs in jumping races and the aggregate values of their victories to their employers : 1908. 1909. 1910. 1911. 1912. 1913. 1914. 1915. 1916. 1917.
