Escoba. gave his legion of admirers further justification for their confidence in him when he worked a mile and an eighth in 1:57. which time is good at this stage of his training for the Kentucky Uerby. Joe Xotter. who will have the mount in the Derby, was astride the colt, and he rated him to |ierfc tion by keeping him so well under control and at such an even pace throughout the move that the colt covered each eighth iu exactly the same time — 13 seconds. The colt moved along with smooth, frictiouless net ion. the even pace at which he went being evident by the fact that he went the quarter in Jit, the half in 52. five-eighths iu 1:05. three-quarters In 1:1**. seven -eighths in 1:31 and the mile in 1:44. He carried fully 125 pounds and was accompanied iu the work by Midway, his stahlemate. which was outpaced «uost of the way. The colt showed no distress after the work and cooled out well.
