May S. — Regardless of what tin-other prominent Kentucky Derby candidates may accomplish in the work line iK-tween now and the afternoon of the race. A. K. Maeombers English-bred colt. War Cloud, will not be dislodged from his aaaMaa as anto-i»ost favorite for the Derby, and one is pretty safe in asserting that he will be a strong public choice when the Derby field parades to the post next Saturday afternoon. Kentuckians are noted for loyalty to their own. but this does not blind them to the sterling qualities of s[ eed -i nd courage when exhibited by one not bred or owned in Old Kentucky. War Cloud showed them in his sensational workout at Churchill Downs Monday, when he ran a mile and a quarter in -:£ ■%;. that he is a horse of the highest type, one possessed of wonderful speed and an ability to maintain it over a mile and a quarter. They were also strongly reminded that the Englishman is in the pink of condition and ready to battle with the liest in the land for the coveted honor of winning the Derby. Speed, courage and stamina an- possessed by War Cloud in an un usual degree ami the combination of these attributes entitle him to the highest consideration, even t » those whose sentiments naturally lean in the lirection of Escoba or the other Kentucky -owned .andidates. Moreover, the majority of those who watched War .loud in the try-out. that shot him into the pin -laele of popular fancy, will tell you that any aspirant that can pick up VJ7 pounds and travel the Derby route in a preliminary trial, in time four-fifths of a second slower than Omar Khayyams winning race of last year, is good enough to over--oine the stoutest opiiositiou he may meet when the .•ace is run next Saturday. In his trial Monday, War Cloud, with John t/.ftus in the saddle, displayed dazzling s|H-ed. gathering moint-ntum with every stride. The first •ighth was covered in 11%, the quarter in 2Z, rlin-e-eightlis is 3T . half in 47!S, five-eighths in ".P-ir. and five and a half furlongs in l:0a%. Fp to this stage he had worked alone, but when he reached the five eighths post, he was joined by J. II. Kos- voters Ser-.-nest. which measured strides with the ■Englishman right up to the end. After being joined hy a pacemaker. War Cloud did not falter for a nio- nent. but maintained his brilliant speed. He ran the ti*.-i w-qtvuters in 1:li!Vh. seven-eighths in 1:36%, mile in 1:38% and mile and ail eighth in 1:81%. The colt did not draw a long breath after being Baaed up and appeared fresh and strong.
