LANIUS TO START IN THE PREAKNESS Arrangements Made to Ship Colt, Together with Trompc La Morte to Pimlico. New York. May S. — O. D. Wideners colt Lanius and J. E. Wideiu-rs TromiK- La Morte will Is-starters in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico next Wednesday, unless something unforseen hap|»ens. A car h.:s been engaged for their shipment at an early date. Both have worked satisfactorily for the traiiiers. A. J. Joyner sent Lanius a mile in 1:43 this morning at Belmont Park, the early part of which was fa t. the first half being run in 47%. and the three-quarters post was passed in 1:14%. Columbine accompanied l.aniiis and they finished clost together. Mr. Joyner was satisfied with the showing of Lanius. there lieing a week to elapse Ix-forc the Preaknass will la- all-.l. Thomas Welsh, the trainer of Trompe La Morte worked his candidate over the Aqueduct course vestenlay. away fnan all inquisitive eyes and has not yet disclosed the result of the trial. The two trainers are •kidding" each other considerably regarding the merits of the two horses, which belong to the brothers Wideners. Mr. Joyner showed his hand to Welsh this morning. Welsh says he will show his hand in the race next Wednesday. Such friendly rivalry between the two trainers ami the owners of Lanius and Trompe La Morte increases the Merest in the race, not only among the friends of the trainers, but those of the owners also. In the absence of Walter Jennings, who is in Kentucky with the Derby favorite War Cloud, his foreman. Maurice Bernard, is giving the Macomber horses slow but useful gallops at Belmont Park. Several of the candidates for early engag-ments from the stables of Major Belmont and R. T. Wilson, in charge of Sam Hildrcth and Tom Healy respectively, were given a canter this morning preparatory to stiff work, which they will get tomorrow. Rody Patterson, in charge of the Gerry horses, hail Delaware and Lady Rosebud out as the first pair, with Balustrade and Bright Lights in the second division. They worked a steady half in about 55 seconds. All four of these youngsters will be ready for early racing and are promising.
