J0HREN FAVORITE FOR THE THIRTY-SIXTH RUNNING OF THE POPULAR LATONIA DERBY I i i ; I I Latonia, Ky.. June 21. — Six colts and one gelding, representing the best three-year-olds that could be mustered from eastern, western and Canadian stables, will make, up the field f«;r the thirty-sixth running of the Latonia Derby, which is expected to attract to Latonia tomorrow afternoon, the largest crowd of the local racing season, if not. indeed, the largest in the history of the track, over which this famous three-year-old race has been run each year without interruption for thirty-five years. The official list of the entries for the race, with the weights to be carried and the jockeys engaged for the various contenders for Derby honors, is made up of the following: Horse. Jockey. Wt. Johren F. Robinson 127 Exterminator .W. Knapp 124 Freecutter D. Connelly 122 American Eagle W. J. OBrien 122 Aurum L. Mink 122 Hollinger L. Gentry 122 Herald J. McCabe 122 The lone gelding in the Derby field is Exterminator, which won the Kentucky Derby for Willis Sharpe Kilmer at Churchill Downs last month over a muddy track. The weather man promises a fair day for the decision of the Derby tomorrow and the general opinion is that Exterminators chances are not so bright under fast track conditions, as they would be-over a wet track. Whil« the elimination of Kenneth D. Alexanders Escoba as a contender for the valuable stakes and the colt relied upon to give H. P. Whitneys Johren the battle of his life, has robbed the race of much of the interest that the expected meeting of these two high-class colts had aroused, still the desire to see the Suburban Handicap and Belmont Stakes winner in action will in a measure offset the absence of Mr. Alexanders popular racer. Inasmuch as two of the seven Derby candidates represent eastern stables, one a Canadian owner and the remaining four western stables, the Derby this year is not only an intersectional contest, but is in reality international in its scope and, in the opinion of racing men gen- erally, the honors will go to the east. Johren and Exterminator are the eastern representatives and the first named, owned by Harry Payne Whitney, known on both sides of the Atlantic as one of the foremtst of American ] sportsmen, will rule a strong favorite for the race. He came west early in the week with the prestige of being the best of the eastern three-year-olds, a prestige fairly earned by a series of meritorious performances on the New York tracks, which included the winning of the famous Suburban Handicap and the Belmont Stakes. , There is general regret that Edward B. Mc- I Leans crack, The Porter, is nqt an eligible for the Latonia Derby and already is there a manifest desire for the winner of tomorrows event to be pitted against The Porter. Since his • arrival here and the impressive fashion in ! which he has disposed of his opponents, the turfmen in these parts have readily accorded The Porter a place at the top and some [ are even inclined to rate him as the best three-year-old in the country. Mr. McLean is not j averse to starting his good colt against the i winner under conditions that would be suitable ] to both. The Latonia Derby was established in 1883 under the name of the Hindoo Stakes and run as such for the first four years of its existence. It has always been run over the true Derby route of one and one-half miles. Iieona-tus, ridden by Isaac Murphy, was the first winner of this popular Latonia feature. Murphy established a record for the race, by riding five of its winners, three in consecutive years, 1885, 1886 and 1887. When Ben Brush won it in 1896, the event was worth 2,290 net to the winner, the largest in its history. In 1915, when Royal II. carried Jefferson Livingstons colors to victory, the net value was 0,125. Tomorrows winner will receive a trifle over 0,000. The fastest time the Derby was run in was 2:30%, made by Governor Gray, when he beat Star Charter in 1911. That time was equalled by John Gund in 1914.
