I ] , I • ! [ j i ] UNCLE WHITE A GOOD ONE ♦ Defeats Ticklish in Fast Run Race, Coming From Behind. ♦ Rifle Victor Over Arriet in the Feature Race of the Day — Gossip of the Track. ♦ Latonia. Ky.. June 21. — Mrs. Edward B. McLeans Incle — Itnsy Lass colt. I nele White, secured for .504 at the August sales last year at Saratoga, from tlie Miller-Headley consignment, showed by his Iierfonnauce this afternoon, that he is a youngster far above the ordinary, the best shown so far in these parts and probably as good as the east can show, for he took into camp the highly rated Ticklish, for which an offer of ?2O.0O» is said to have lH-en refused by Messrs. Mi, iris and Walden. Incle Whites iierformance had the more merit from the fact that he ran at least fifty yards further than Ticklish, being guided extremely wide during the first three-eighths and losing considerable ground around the turns. He began slowly, while Ticklish, with a good display of speed, moved into the lead and. staying close to the inner rail, held command until Incle White loomed up with a sensational sprint, that brought him by the others, as if they were standing still. In the last eighth lie was inclined to loaf and OBrien had to rouse him sharply, but uoar the end he was again going fast and steadily, winning hy a half length. Ticklish was far in advance of Lancelot. Whatever betting was indulged iu on the race was mainly monopolized by Incle White and Ticklish, with the McLean representative a pronounced choice at the finish. Todays card was of the off-day variety, five of the races being designed with a view to giving the poorer class of racers here opportunity to earn purses. The feature race, a purse of ,000. found the English mare Arriet an overwhelming favorite and her downfall by the consistent Rifle, which trainer Pat Dunne has iu superb form at present, was a stunner for the backers. Rifle raced into a good lead after passing the half mile ground and trom there on always held Arriet safe. The latter was ! imgliiigly ridden by Gentry, who took her wide on the fiist turn ami lost additional ground by keeping her iu the middle of the track. After Rose of Autumn had threatened to make a runaway ra -e of it iu the first half mile of the opening race. Saza-Namy came along and beat tlie McLean filly to the finish. The second race resulted in a stirring finish, with Arch Plotter just managing to outstay Yorkville to win by u nose. Another nose finish developed in the third race and went to Sweet Alyssum over Sirocco. Little Princess, so lightly regarded that she was grouped with others in the field, furnished an upset when she heat the favorite. Broom Peddler, in the fourth race. The closing race went to the consistent El Rey, which won in easy style. JOCKEY KNAPP ARRIVES FB0X EAST. Jockey W. Knapp. who will ride Exterminator in the Derby, arrived this afternoon and stated that his mount would take a lot of lieating in the DcVby. ".lohren is a fine horse." said Knapp. "but he is not unbeatable and I anact to see Exterminator give him a stout battle for honors in the Derby." Secretary Campbell has issued Cue program book for the nine days of racing at Latonia from Monday next to Wednesday. July 3. As in the case of the liook for the first eight days of the meeting, it is replete with provisions for overnight handicaps aim allowance races, designed to bring the best horses iu training at the track into frequent coni]ietitioii. The stakes to lie run during the ] criod covered by the liook include the Harold Stakes of .tMH added, for two-year-old colts and geldings, five-eighths of a mile, which will be decided on Wedm sday Hit, and the Merchants Selling Stakes of *1.5«K added, for three-year-olds and over, one mile, which will lx- run on Saturday. June 29. Manager Hackaaeister made the definite announcement that beginning with Monday, the starting time for the opening race each day would lie advanced to 2:15 oclock. The admission fees for Derby day will Ik- : 2.20 for gentlemen, including war tax. and .65 for ladies, including war tax. Trainer J. S. Ward is hopeful that Escobas injuries will prove less serious than at first feared. He thinks it will not lie necessary to subject the ailing tendon to the firing iron and that, with adequate rest in the meantime, it may lie possible to get the colt back to the races in condition to fill some of his engagements at Saratoga. Willis Sharpe Kilmer arrived today from New York with a party of friends to see the running of the Derby, in which Exterminator will carry his colors. Jockey W. Knapp, who wiil ride this horse, also arrived from the east. Jefferson Livingston was another arrival for the Derby, in which he will lie represented by Aurum. a
