Rees — Five Favorites Take Their Races. » Latonia, Ky., June 24. — Close finishes were the order of most of the race decided this afternoon at Latonia and, despite a featureless racing arrangement, good sport was witnessed by a big Monday assemblage. The best race programed was the fifth, for a ,000 purse. It was won by Fau-Col. with Capt. Rees following and Courtship third. The winner raced in his b-st form anil showed high sjH-ed for the entire way, but at the end he had to be shaken up to outstay the fast coming Capt. Bees. The usual maiden race began the day and Ginger which made his debut at Lexington and has since started many times, finally managed to graduate into the winning ranks, by leading from the start and beating the first-timer Candle Light, with Silvery Light landing in third place. Backers of favorites had a good inning, for five of their choices managed to land in advance. They inaugurated their success with Gingers victory and followed it np with Hocnir in the second race. Hocnir had to be much the best to win. for he began slowly and was a distant last in the first sixteenth, but won with ridiculous ease. Manicurist was given preference for some reason in the third race, but she never figured in the result, the finish developing a rattling drive of three, with Iwin the victor by a head from Bulldoze, while a like margin back came Orenzo. Bae was an outstanding choice in the fourth »--~e and he justified it by leading Throughout to win -easily from Ardent and Willdo. Dr. Carmen was backed with confiden.-e in the sixth race and he made good after indulging Lord Byron with the lead until reaching the stretch turn. The last race found Marauder hacked aiaiost to the exclusion of the others, but the best he could do was to land in third place. Bubbling Louder and March Wind fighting it out at the finish, with the Bradley representative taking the purse by a neck. Inder the painstaking efforts of Superintendent Chas. Nolte, the track is responding well and it is back now in the best condition that it has been iu this year. The colors of H. McCarren. Jr.. wen- seen here for tin- first time in a long while and were carried this afternoon by his Endurance, which is lieing trained by I. T. Morris. It was generally supposed that McCarren had retired from the turf for good anil was back at his former occupation, that of a produce merchant. W. H. Baker contemplates shipping shortly some of ids horses to Empire City track and some to Saratoga, to be rested there for the meeting iu August. RACING AT KENTUCKY FAIRS. Horsemen who are planning to remain in Kentucky at the close of the regular racing season at Litonia and. especially the owners of the cheaper grade of racers, will find some employment for their horses at the fairs in various parts of Kentucky, which are including racing in their list of attractions. For instance, the Montgomery Canity Fair Association has just sent a letter to Manager John Hachmeister of the Latonia track, asking him to interest horsemen in the racing program to lie given in connection with its fair at Mt. Sterling on July 24. 25. 21! and 27. There will be two races for thoroughbreds each day, with purses ranging from 00 to 00. Mr. Hachmeister has agree* 1 to furnish this association a sufficient number of pari-mutuel machir.es to handle the betting on the races. J. B. Respess now has hopes that his English sprinter Purdey will stand training and will get to racing before the present Latonia meeting is over. The horse has improved after his recent lameness, following a work-out. Dr. C. W. Crowley, who has a string of horses in training at Latonia, was an arrival from his home in St. Louis. There was considerable excitement at the track this morning wlien Covington authorities arrested several persons, mostly dockers, under tin- recently enacted anti-loafing law in Kentucky. Those apprehended included former jockeys S. R. Williams and W. C. Overton. The departure of Johren. winner of this years Latonia Derby, eliminated any possibility of a meeting between him and The Porter. Trainer Simons first broached the subject of a match, but imiMised conditions unsuited to The Porter camp. They were willing enough to wager 0,000 or more that The Porter can beat Johren at a mile, but Simons insisted that the distance Im- a mile and a quarter at scale weights. The Porter has never been sent a mile and a quarter. Announcement that the Latonia Derby, beginning with next season, would have 0,000 added, was batted with joy by owners here and it practically insures the entry of every well-thought of two-year-old, which will make the purse worth fully 5,000 to the winner. The exclusion of geldings from the race came as a surprise. Secretary Earlocker. of the Saratoga Racing Association, has sent notices here to horsemen to refrain from shipping to that track unless they receive notification that stable room has been granted to their horses.
