FATHER AND SON GREAT TRAINERS Remarkable Successes of Horses Trained by the Two Taylors in English Racing It is now about twentyfour years since Aloe Taylor lio founded tlic famous training establish ¬ ment at Manton died and left his sons to carry on Urn business His record was a great one as Mos len which deadlioated with Formosa for the Two Thousand was under his care and five years later ho won the Guineas with Jang Forward Winners of the One Thousand Guineas which lie trained were Anhroditc Mayonaise Thebais St Marguerite and Keve dOr of the Derby Teddington and Sefton f the Oaks Thebais and Reve dOr and of the St Legcr St Alltans and Craigmillar while amongst other notable classic victories were those of Ted dington and Timothy in the Cold Cnp Macheath for the Middle Park Plate Thebais for the Criterion Stakes and Keve dOr for the Dewlmrst Plate Alec Taylor the younger started in partnership with bis brother Tom but soon lost his assistance and las first big hit was with Love Wisely in the Hold Cup which he also won vith Itayanlo and Alppo At the Koyal meeting Bayardo and Lem berg both made a winning debut in the New Stakes Saner won the Kous Memorial and Prince of Wales Stakes which alsii fell to Bayardo and Ixmberg lie took the Ascot Stakes with Aborigine Pradclla and Declare the Alexandra Plate with Aborigine and Torpoin twice and the Hunt CUM with Diune ford and Moscato MoscatoA A WONDERFUL RECORD RECORDThe The One Thousand Guineas lias so far eluded the Master of Manton but his record is one of which lie may feel justly proud including as it does the Two Thousand Guineas three times with Kenuymore Jay Crusader and Gainsborough the Kjmenumlwr of Dcrbvs witli Lemberg Gay Crusader and Gainsborough and of the Oaks with Rosedrop Sunnv Jane and My Dear The St Leger lias fallen to Manton bv the aid of Challacombe Itaynrdo and Gay Crusader Here we have a total of twelve classic victories as against his fathers thirteen or to be strictly accurate twelve and a half allowing for Moslems deadheat but it seems almost safe to prophesy that the sons record will excel the older one but a total of twentyfive wins in two gener ¬ ations is certainly magnificent allowing even for the luck which gave My Dear the Oaks last week after slie had been beaten by a distinctly better mare in Stony Ford To the fine list of successes above enumerated must be added the Jockey Club Stall s five times with Lovely Sceptre Sancy Lem berg and Trois Temps five Dewhurst Plates with Bayardo Lentberg Phryxus deadheat Kcnny inore and Telephns the Middle Park Plate with ISayardo and Lcmbcrg the Chester Vase witli Sancy and Itayardo the National Breeders Produce Stakes at Samlown with ISayardo and Rcdfern the Eclipse Stakes with ISayardo and Lembtrg the Chester Cnp with Elizabeth and Aleppo tlie Epsom Coronation and the Doncaster Cups with Lemberg tlie Cesare witch with Grey Tick and the Princess of AVales Stakes with Dinneford Queens Advocate and The Curigh tlie lastnamed also taking the Kempton Jubilee Tlie Goodwood Cnp went to Mantou by the help of Plumtree the Liverpool Cups were won bv Dinneford and Highness the Manchester No ¬ vember Handicap by Admiral Togo and innumerable races of minor importance indeed it would be in ¬ teresting to know the value of the stakes won by the Mantoi horses since Alec Taylor took charge for it must amount to a colossal sain more than sufficient to prove that tlie fathers mantle has fallen on the right shoulders for Taylor the younger is as clever in the art of training as was Old Alec than which no greater compliment could be paid to any member of the profession professionHIGHLY HIGHLY IMPORTANT DOUBLES DOUBLESIt It is a groat achievement for a trainer to score the great double urciit of Derby and Oaks but to have done it three times is extraordinary yet such has iKen Taylors good fortune with Lemberg and Rosedrop Gay Crusader and Sunny Jane and finally with Gainslwirongh and My Dear Moreover he was the first man to train a Derby winner for a lady and but for his advice Lady James Douglas would probably have sold tlie son of ISayardo after he had as a yearling failed to reach bis reserve I have never been able to understand why Rosedroy should have been allowed to leave the stud for she not ouly won the Oaks but is a mare of the highest breeding Her owner was of course then in ignorance of the merit of Grainsborough and was perhaps disappointed by the fact that she was barren to llayardo Tlie mare however was sold for 2300 guineas mated with Polymelus Lady James lias a good twoyearold in Bayuda which was i Ktrmig street corner til last ivcek for the First Kxtra Tv i YearOld Stakes but did not run as she developed a temperature after arriving at Newmarket The filly is by ISayardo Jessica by Eager and will it is hoped be all right again in time for the next meeting when she is engaged in the New Coventry Stakes with Manilardo brother to Gay Crusader also trained at Mauton and be ¬ longing to Mr Cox CoxSilesia Silesia the dam of My Dear is a halfsister to ISayardo Lemberg and Kwang Su and showed such promise as a yearling that she was heavily engaged for the Ixjst Rices but she never ran as a twoyear old and was beaten eight times as a threeyear old always in the best company and no doubt she could have been placed to win minor races As the dam of My Dear she has made good at the stud while at the same time adding to the fame of her own diKi Galicia and Mr Cox has a twoyearold halfsister to the Oaks winner in Ciceronetta which needless to say is sired by Cicero with which the mare was mated again the season following Last year the Manton twoyearolds met with remarkable KHCOSS Damask winning three times Quadrille GaiiisJifrougli Prince Cliimay Blink ISapaume and Prisijiit once each and My Dear twice but I think Rnchaii is the only Manton youngster which has won this season This handsome son of Sunstar made if most favorable impression and may prove a host in himself he is the sort of horse to back until he is IfaJen ISut there arc in reserve Manilardo and ISa yuda already referred to Lord Basil a half brother to the expatriated Magpie by Bayardo Jns by Lemberg Countess of Desmond and Con ¬ trol by Chaucer Camlarg and with such pedigrees it will l e strange if some of them do not win good races All this points to more successes to come and gives every assurance that the fame of Manton i as great today as ever it was and that the bistre of its wonderful record is more than likely to be made brighter than to become dim Vigilant in London
