NAMING OF TWO FAMOUS RACERS The naming of horses sometimes give rise to good stories It was said that one bright spring morn ¬ ing two colts were born at Klmendorf in Kentucky the home of Colonel D D Swigert Mrs Swigcrt happened to visit tiie city on that day and made several purchases which she displayed to her lord anil master on her return home homeColonel Colonel Swigert never had i reputation for ex ¬ cessive generosity and when he viewed the result of his wifes shopping expedition he waxed some ¬ what wrathy wrathyI I was jnst thinking of naming those thorough ¬ bred colts madam said he and I think I shall name one of them in your honor I shall call him Spendthrift SpendthriftA A thousand thanks Colonel retorted the sprightly gentlewoman A thousand thanks and I presume you will be gallant enough to permit me to nimc the other one oneCertainly Certainly madam retorted the owner of Elui cmlirf tartly tartlyVeil Veil that being the case Colonel resumed the lady I shall name the other one for you and call him Miser MiserSitendthrift Sitendthrift turned out to be among the best ever seen on the American turf
