SOME GREAT UNBEATEN TWO YEAR OLDS IN THE HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN TURF Wliilc few years pass without the appearance of twoyearolds that emerge from their initial season in racing undefeated thanks to being subjected to the test of competition on comparatively few occa ¬ sions and in moderate company it is only occasion ¬ ally that the tvoyearold of the highest class competing with its compeers and picking up the penalties that its successive triumphs entail retires at the end of its twoyearold season with an un ¬ tarnished record The yast few years have brought only one that measures up to the standard in mind even although during the period of depression from which the turf in this country has emerged some juveniles of undoubtedly highclass have been in action The last but one such was the brilliant Colin whose achievements in 1007 stamped him as one of the most extraordinary thoroughbreds that America lias produced The readers of Daily Itacing Form may be interested in a resume of the racing records of the unbeaten juvenile stars whose feats entitle them to inclusion in this highly exclusive class classGEOEGE GEOEGE LOEILLAEDS STAE SENSATION SENSATIONSensation Sensation was a beautiful brown colt of faultless action and great speed In his time tracks were deep and slow and the richest stakes wcr scant in value compared with those provided for the juvenile racers of later days He met all the good youngsters of his time and vanquished them conclusively All of his races were for stakes He was the property of George Lorillard throughout his racing career which only covered his year of triumph Sickness in the winter following his two yearold racing incapacitated him from further service on the track Subsequently he was a suc ¬ cessful sire His racing record the year being 1870 was as follows followsRace Race Track Dist Time Value ValueJuvenile Juvenile Stakes Jerome Park 12 in uO 2150 2150July July Stakes Monmouth 58 111 107 475 475Flash Flash Stakes more effectively than the black twoyearold colt Tremoiit by Virgil Ann Feif by Lexington He was a truly wonderful twoyear old exceedingly quick on his feet and usually away from the post so fast that his opponents were beaten from the start in vain efforts to match the electric speed at once developed In none of his races was there even approximately a close finish except in the solitary instance of the Surf Stakes at Sheepshcad Bay Here in a bad start he was practically left at the post but took after the others and finally won from Queen of Elizabeth by threequarters of a length In all of his other races it was Tremont first at the finish in a canter anywhere from three lengths to ten lengths in front In the Junior Champion Stakes he defeated such a celebrity as Kingston by eight lengths Tre mouts seasons record was as follows followsKnee Knee Track Dist Time Value ValueJuvenile Juvenile Stakes Jerome Park 12 m 484 2400 Sequence Stakes Jerome Park 5S in 10214 2275 Foam Stakes unbeaten twoyearold colt that subsequently was a mighty race horse in other years while Tremonts racing was all done when whenhe he was a twoyearold This other colt was Han ¬ over a chestnut colt by Hindoo Bourbon Belle Tremont was campaigned extensively but Hanover was only started in three races His first essay was in the Hopeful stakes at Moumouth Park which he won from Fitzroy with some difficulty by a half length Then he won the July Stakes from Oneko again by a half length but carried 120 pounds to Onekos 110 His last race was when he won the Sapling Stakes from Kingston by two appearance a model of symmetry and power He was bred owned and raced by Theodore Winters of Nevada His first start was in the St Louis Brewers Stakes at St Louis Then he was brought to Chicago and at Washington Park won the Kenwood Stakes Hyde Park Stakes and a purse Taken cast from here he won the Great Eclipse Stakes AVliite Plains Handicap and Diinmow Stakes at the first meeting ever hold at Morris Park His flight of speed was meteoric and no weight was too much for his powerful frame In his first race at Washington Park with 123 pounds up he stumbled and almost fell directly after the start going down so far that his face was squarely against the track yet he recovered and in an amazing flight of speed overtook his faraway competitors and finally won from Lord Peyton by a length Developing lameness after winning the Dunmow he was retired He was trained the fol ¬ lowing year but fearing he would break down Mr Winters concluded to race him no more Yet it is a fact that he worked a mile at Washington Park in l384fc with 140 pounds up then far faster than the mile record His record was wasItacc Itacc Track Dist Time Value ValueSt St Louis Brewers Stakes St L 34 ml22 1380 sent out here to Chicago and paid his expenses by capturing the rich Hyde Park Stakes at Washington Park Otherwise his triumphs were achieved over the tracks in the vicinity of New York His record as courses was the sensation of the season of 1907 on the New York tracks He was the property of the late James It Keeue and was bred by that renowned turfman being by the dead Commando Pastorella He raced only as a two yearold and a threeyearold and left a record unsullied by defeat After filling three of his threeyearold engagements in this country he was sent to England but went wrong in training in that country and was retired to the stud there without having raced abroad Later on he was returned to this country and was purchased by Price McKinney of Cleveland Ohio While it is difficult to draw accurate comparisons between the crack racers of different periods it can Iin said or Colin that many competent judges consider him the greatest thoroughbred that has ever graced the American turf His threeyearold success included the whining of the Withers Belinont and Tidal Continued ou second page UNBEATEN TWO YEAR OLDS Continued from first page Stakes and his record as a along in the campaign of 1914 making her first appearance at Saratoga August 8 From the outset she was flown at the highest game Her first race was for the Saratoga Special at threequarters of a mile over a fast track This she won in 111 with 119 pounds up defeating Pebbles Paris Luke and four more The manner of her accomplishment of this fine racing feat i impressed the beholders greatly and from
