SOME PRESENT DAY IRISH HORSES Orbys Son Athlone Held to Be One of the Fastest Horses in Ireland Not the least interesting feature of the racing this week was the running of the twoyearolds of which ChilTrc dAmour Seabloom and Ballyeaston came out best and the firstnamed secured the crack event the AVaterford Testimonial Stakes She carries no lumber and is a lightfleshed filly which may easily be the best of the season though it is yet full early to come to any definite conclus ¬ ion on that point From the smart Confey she had a pull of ten pounds in the weights but as the gray daughter of The Tetrarch beat the daughter of Polymelns by two lengths and a half she nullified her advantage in the matter of weight Chiflre dAmour had a good nice with Guildcd Vanity which conceded three pounds to the winner but there was a little ease in the manner in which Chiffre dAmour scored though it has to be borne in mind that Guildcd Vanity was making her first appearance and ran somewhat green She showed great speed and is a worthy descendant of the old Irish strain from which she comes that of Fraulein by Pride of Prussia Guilded Vanity is u daughter of Orby whose death was a big loss to breeders Irish and English alike and the sustained success of his progeny ought to direct attention to those sons of his at the stud Ballyeaston had to put his best foot foremost to win the 2500 Nursery from Wetonah and Graimrd and if one credits the reports current concerning his high class at home we must conclude that it was his want of experience which made it so near a thing for him with the other pair both of which were previous winnprs and were allowing weight to the sou of Marcovil MarcovilOTHER OTHER PERFORMERS PERFORMERSIn In the handicap class the best performances were those of Athlone and Timler The former is a son of Orby and the first produce of Cclone a daughter of Wavelets Pride Eryholme dam of Anchora by Hazelhatch so that while he gets staying quali ¬ ties through Wavelets Pride he has speed through Orby and Hazelhatch Athloue won the 11500 Flat Hath Stakes after a good setto with the smart Lovely Morning and as the sou of Orby was in re ¬ ceipt of only live pounds from his two years older rival it is clear there was much merit in his achievement Athlone belongs to Mr Cnllinan who bought him as a yearling for 350 guineas and I have little doubt lie is one of the speediest horses in training in Ireland Timler won the St Patricks Handicap also of the value of 2500 and his vic ¬ tory was I think gained iuuch more easily than is generally thought He goes on improving anil has claims to be considered the best threeyearold in Ireland It is unfortunate that he was not in either the Irish Derby or the Irish St Leger for he must have had a good chance of winning one or the other Last year his running seemed to show that speed rather than staying was his forte but clearly in view of his success at Balddyle1 over a mile and a half and at the Curragh over a mile that estimate needs to be revised Dublin Letter to London Sportsman
