HYMNS OF HATE Our boys in France hate straight Their fighting is fierce because their hatred of the Germans is the same sameThey They hate the Germans because they know that although they are soldiers in the sense that they are part of a military organization and in uniform they also are cutthroats who murder women and children and do so with genuine gusto because it is safer than attacking an armed enemy Nor have our boys in the trenches any fine spun theories as to their being any difference between the German government and the German people They know that a people that celebrates the sinking of the Lusitania with ringing of bells displays of flags holidays in the schools and other festivities is just as cruel as the government that ordered the vessel sunk and that it is just as much to be hated They know too that there is yet to be heard a protest from the German people against the barbarities practiced by their armies and their navy including the killing of nurses and wounded in hospitals the sinking of lied Cross ships and the ruthless murder of unarmed civilians civiliansTlie Tlie French and the English had to have lessons in hate Early in the war an officer of the Ger ¬ man navy who had been taken prisoner and was aboard a British war ship bound for an English l ort was given the courtesy of the officers mess He appreciated the favor and was expressing his regret that under the circumstances he could do nothing in return Then up piped a young mid ¬ shipman and wholly unconscious of tlie humor in what he was about to request said You might sing us The Hymn o Hate Weve heard of it but havent hward it New York Herald
