YEARLING SALES ON SMALLER SCALE Largo Number of Youngsters Sold Privately Thins Out Material for Auction Block New York July 27 Judging from the number of entries In the yearling sales catalogs for the coming auctions at Saratoga the number of youngsters disposed of will b considerably less than a year ago This is not due to a shortage in breeding but rather to tlie fact that much of the domestic stock has been bought up at private sales salesSamuel Samuel Willets took a half interest in the Star Shoots from John E Madden which eliminates quite a number from the salesring and A K Ma comber purchased all of the Headley and Miller yearlings which means another reduction reductionIt It is probable the chief shortage is due to lack of importations said W II Rowe who presides over the Jockey Club Registration Bureau Last year there were many foreignbred horses offered at Saratoga This year there have been no impor ¬ tations of consequence The shortage of offerings must not be placed to the lack of domestic breeding or want of confidence in the industry It is at ¬ tributable to a combination of causes The more fashionable establishments race all their own stock or sell it later on There were many weanlings sold last year Their absence this year also makes the catalogs look a bit thin But there will be a good market for those offered as many reputable sires are represented
