DIRT THAT KILLS Some of the battlefields of 15elginm and Franc are old farms This old farming soil is full of germs It was on utuh land that Harry Martin was in action He had just come out of the trenches and started to charge when his arm was struck by a machinegun bullet Like every wounded man his llrst instinct Avas to clap his hand on the wound This smeared it with dirt A piece of hi muddy uniform was also driven in by the bullet Harry bled almost white before one of his com ¬ rades did a bad job of bandaging A firstaid band ¬ age put on by an ordinary soldier is almost always pulled so tight that it does more harm than good goodWhen When Harry finally got taken to the hospital his arm was ii a bad way The germs from the old farm soil had been busy and the arm was dying from gas gangrene When an arm or leg gets a dose of this kind of gangrene it turns iuto a regular gas plant The skin puffs out and crackles like a dried bladder when touched Amputation is the only hope They called Harry lucky because he lost only his arm and didnt die as many do when at ¬ tacked by this gas gangrene that comes from the germs in old farm land The Docket
