SARATOGA TRACK A MARVEL Unanimous Opinion of Horsemen New Course Is Unsurpassed H A Porters Highly Valued Two TwoYearOld YearOld Pride of India i Meets with Mishap Saratoga Springs N Y July 30 So much has Ixen said about the new track at Saratoga and so much praise deluged upon Superintendent Billy Myer that further comment is almost unnecessary but owing to a severe rainstorm last night trainers had a chance to see the track under new conditions uul it has exceeded all expectations After one hours terrific rain last night trainers went out expecting 1o see a sea of mud and all sorts of trouble Noth ¬ ing like it They stepped into the mud and dug their heels into the going and found it just about two inches deep in mud and then a decided hard bottom which in their estimation would take a long continuous rain to change This indicates that the track is not only going to be the fastest in dry weather but will not l c heavy excepting after a deluge and perhaps not then It is the unanimous opinion of all horsemen here there never was a track like it under any conditions in this country countryIt It is simply marvelous said trainer Harry Mor ¬ rissey There is a cushion on it which is like jilusli and you never hear the sound of a hoof yet it is so fast that before this meeting is over I lirvUiet all records will be broken from a quarter of a mile to any distance a horse is asked to go As for its effect upon horses I have a horse that has gone sore on me all year yet he comes up here and extends himself naturally It is simply wonder ¬ ful fulEXPERTS EXPERTS AGREE TRACK IS FAST FASTMr Mr Morrissey is not alone in his opinion for such experts us James Howe E It Bradley M Daly William Garth in fact all who nave been asked the question expressed the same sentiments sentimentsWhile While horsemen were nut permitted to work over it this morning it was opened this afternoon for horses that are going to run on Thursday and all the probable starters in the Saratoga Handicap did their bit Most of the work this morning was done over the Oklahoma track trackOne One unfortunate incident occurred when Henry Porters Delhi Dominoe celt Pride of India step ¬ ped on a stone and bruised his heel This is the fastest colt in the Porter bant and his pulling up lame is a sad disappointment to Harry Morrissey his trainer who expected him to win the United States Hotel Stakes on Saturday SaturdayMr Mr Porter accepted the report of the colts condi ¬ tion philosophically notwithstanding the fact that James Howe offered him 25000 for Pride of India afcr he pulled up lame The offer was refused Mr Porter stating that twice the sum would not buy him even if lie never raced again Fortunately the injury is only slight and temporary Harry Morrissey reporting he will be all right in a few lays but he will not start on Saturday Horsemen intimate that Pride of India is the fastest colt of the year by a decided margin and far superior to High Time and My Friend In the same stable stableFUNERAL FUNERAL OF TRAINER CLIFF HAMMON HAMMONNearly Nearly everyone connected with racing attended the funeral of the late Cliff Ilammoii this after ¬ noon He was buried in the Saratoga Cemetery from the Elks Club of which he was a member memberW W S Kilmer is going to turn one or two of his horses over to Simon Ilealy to train according to authentic report though Mr Healy had not been officially notified yesterday This does not mean a change of trainers nor the entire stable but Mr Kilmer intends to have two strings stringsMose Mose Goldblatt watched Polyuieliait work three quarters over the new course yesterday After moving slowly for the first quarter in 24 5i Poly meliau was sent fast and just flew the remainder of the distance covering the route in 112 If I had to run my horses against him remarked Mr Goldblatt I would immediately ship them to Kentucky In fact Ill be ashamed to run any of mine the same day he performs It will not be at all surprising to me to see the fast horses run threequarters of a mile much better than 111 and a mile in 13G is quite probable probableSo So far not a horie that has worked over the track has pulled up sore This is a different condition from that of last year when many trainers refused to run their charges 011 account of the cuppy and uncertain footing which caused many hordes to fall lame lameJames James McGill arrived in the village last night having motored from Indianapolis It is his first extended visit to an eastern course since the deatli of his uncle the late George Smith Pittsburg Phil who willed him a comfortable fortune Mr McGill is the owner of the Indianapolis Baseball Club vhich has disbanded according to the government work or fight edict I would not have had it ball phiyor left said Mr McGIll and I decided to break up immediately instead of using up the few tluys ill August as permitted I shall remain here for the season and tbuu motor to Los Angeles to stay all winter with my two children Twice I have motored to California and it is a mighty fine trip Mr and Mrs McGill will occupy the Mc Guire cottage for the season seasonAmong Among the late arrivals are Bob Hose Ike Ilackel bnrg Al Koenigsburg Ed Ueffucr Sig Levy and James Villcpigue
