GOOD NEWS FROM MARYLAND Influenza Situation Throughout State Shows Big Improvement Hope Now Entertained for Re ¬ sumption of Racing at Laurel by Next Monday Baltimore Md October 24 The encouraging reports of the last several days on the influenza situation here culminating in a still better one to ¬ day resulted in orders by the city health authori ¬ ties removing some of the restrictions adopted to aid in checking the spread of the disease It ws also reported that the improvement throughout the state continues continuesAfter After hearing these reports the officials of the Maryland State Fair which operates the laurel race track together witli the horsemen who have their horses quartered there expressed themselves as optimistic over the outlook for an early re ¬ sumption of the sport in Maryland MarylandLocal Local devotees of racing had expected that the ban against public gatherings would be lifted in time to resume the Laurel meeting next Saturday but it is now thought that it may be possible to begin Monday MondayKveryonp Kveryonp here and elsewhere in tho east is hoping that the sport will l o resinned by MondaX iftTthe latest especially in view of the fact that that is the date agreed upon for the special nice between Billy Kelly and Eternal EternalWith With the close of the New York fall season at Knipire City Saturday the majority of the horse ¬ men racing there are expected to ship here for the coming Pimlico meeting scheduled to begin Friday November 1 1Something Something definite in the nature of an announce ¬ ment as to whether or not Laurel will be able to open Monday is expected tomorrow tomorrowTrainers Trainers hereabouts are busily engaged these days keeping their horses on edge and will be prepared when the glad tidings are announced PLANS FOR JEFFERSON PARK MEETING Purses Will Be Increased and Percentage of Re ¬ ceipts Will Go to Red Cross CrossNew New Orleans La October 24 G I Bryan part owner of the Thorncliffe race track in Canada the Bowie track in Maryland and several other nice courses among them Jefferson Park is an arrival in New Orleans Mr Bryan motored here from Florida where he was delayed several weeks with a touch of influenza influenzaIt It was believed that with the arrival of Mr Bryan definite dates would be announced for Jef ¬ ferson Parks winter racing season But Mr Bryan says neither lie nor the local directors of the Jefferson Parish Fair Association will be able to tell what they will do until they meet and discuss the situation situationBecause Because of the long lapse that would have existed in racing dates if the Kentucky season had closed November 2 as originally scheduled it at first was rumored that Jefferson Park would open its 1918 season a week or two earlier than Thanksgiving Day But now that Latonias opening has been postponed it is probable Jefferson Park will not open before Thanksgiving Day DayA A fine program is being planned by Jefferson Park directors It already has been announced there will be a material increase in nurses and sev ¬ eral stake races are under consideration Races to which Liberty Bonds will be attached will be run every day and there will also be War Savings Stamp purses Five per cent of all winning purses will go to the Red Cross according to present plans plansManager Manager Anthony Honprich has been working with a force of men on the Shrewsbury fair grounds and the track is fast rounding into condition Sev ¬ eral stables are quartered there and many of tho horses already are being worked around the track Top o th Morning W C Weants tried old per ¬ former is about the best known horse here now He is being prepared for a strenuous winter season
