WINNING BET ON ANOTHER NINE NINESome Some twenty years ago when the horse Nine was a fair sort and was at Louisville Ky a certain Louisville life insurance company official who for political reasons could not afford to lie seen at the race tracks was tipped by a confidential friend that Nine was going to trv extra hard to win the third race that day Mr Lico barely had time to call a district messenger give him 50 and hustle him out to the track with instructions to bet it all to win on Nine in the third race The messeuger bov was late ran into the ring grabbed a program glanced at the third race and had just time to bet the 50 to win on the horse that was No 9 on the program his ticket reading 000 to 50 and it won by three lengths The messenger cashed in hurried back to his employer who in the meantime had learned by phone that Nine was in the also rans with the bank roll and program laid the lot on the desk before him and stood at attention Mr Lico gasped and asked Say kid whats this that horse lost Kid answered No he didnt he won a block Mr Lico did some telephoning then handed the messenger a yellow fifty only with the instruction never to answer another call at his office
