HOW A LAST HORSE WON A BET BETHere Here is a true story of a bet which Steve LHom inedleu took and paid at Latonia along about the fall of 1903 I was investing on post favorites those days hence was at Steves stand just inside and at the left of the door in the old red brick pen was just pocketing my 12 place card when in rushed a chap from the Green Car all out of breath held u 2 and gasped Silvertuil This was an irongray horse with white maim and tail entered in the sxt1 race that day His price was 1001 to win and Steve kidding as usual asked How do you want this to finish first or last The chan grinned and answered I dont care and Steve turned to his ticket writer and told him to write that ticket with blue nencil 2002 to finish LAST and handed the ticket to the bettor just as the barrier was sprung A bunch of us looked over and saw the field away with Silvertail stand ¬ ing on his heels and pawing the air left by thirty lengths Steve was heard to mutter to himself Wonder if that jock will finish with him Well jock and Silvertail did finish and pass the judges fifty lengths last The bettor looked up at Steve and said Thanks and was first in line to the cashier who turned and asked Steve Whats this for holding the ticket And be it said to the credit of Mons L Honimedieu he answered Its for 202 real money and you pay it But that wasnt all that bteve paid for the joke F B R Terre Haute Ind
