GAY CRUSADER WILL RACE NO MORE Magpie Barely Beaten by Him Fails Twice in Australian Races The English Derby winner of 1917 Gay Crusader by Bayardo Gay Laura has been retired to the stud and is to stand for a fee of 2020 In August there was talk of the possible meeting at weightforagc between him and Gainsborough the Derby winner of this year which is by the same sire dam Rosedrop a granddaughter of Trenton The chance of this meeting now coming off is re ¬ mote but is still a possibility for the rumors circu ¬ lated that Gay Crusader had hopelessly broken down had annoyed his owner A W Cox who characterized them as absurd exaggerations and said lie was most anxious to bring off a meeting between the two sons of Bayardo to settle the question of supremacy and both were engaged in the rich Jockey Club Stakes a weightforage event run for at Newmarket on October 3 Gay Crusader had 130 pounds and Gainsborough 124 pounds but the former did not start the race being won by Prince Chimay a stablemate of Gainsborough while Queens Square in the same ownership as Gay Crusader was third and Gainsborough second secondAs As Gay Jmsader was twice beaten by Coq dOr his only defeats once at a difference of three pounds and once at eleven pounds in the hitters favor ami as lie lias a victory over Magpie in tin Two Thousand Guineas a few lines concerning this latest addition to Englands stallions will bu of interest i view of the fact that both Coi dOr and Magpie are in Australian now When the latter defeated that marvelous mare Desert Gold in the Melbourne Stakes on Saturday week it looked as though he had a mortgage on all weightforage races up to a mile and a half but two sons of Kenilworth have defeated him since Wolaroi in the Linlithgov Stakes one mile and Kennaqiihair in the C B Fisher Plate one and onehalf miles The English horse was beaten only a head in one race and a neck in the other but it is highly satis ¬ factory to Australians to know that we have horses capable of getting in front of such a highclass thoroughbred no matter how infinitesimal the margin marginWhen When Magpie met Gay Crusader in the Two Thousand Guineas the latter won by a head only but as that was Magnios last race in England it is impossible to draw any line between them for horses trained in Gay Crusaders stable are seldom at their best so early in the season but what applies to Gay Crusader in that respect must have more or less application to all horses in England for it is impossible to give them fast work while the tracks are under snow or frost frostGay Gay Crusader started ten times and won eight of his races beating the best of his year in all the more important races and as Magpie ran him to a head in the Two Thousand Guineas it clearly shows that in oluroi and Kennaqiihair Australia has two race horses of high merit It was a singu ¬ lar coincidence that these two sons of Kenilworth should fill second places in both Cups this year and the fact that eacli carried a good horses weight and made such a fine effort is a great advertise ¬ ment for their sire Their crowning triumih how ¬ ever was to defeat Magpie Sydney N S W Referee
