MATCHEM LINE REVIVAL IN ENGLAND Descendants of Barcaldine nourishing in the Stud and Renewing Matchcms Influence in Breeding Not many years ago the fortunes of the Matthem male line hung upon the two threads of Barcaldine and Arbitrator both sons of Solon The former of these as most people are aware was incestuously bred his sire and his dam Ballyroe being respec ¬ tively son and granddaughter of the mare known as Darlings dam Such close inbreeding in the past has often been productive of phenomenal perform ¬ ers and although these are not always anything like so successful at the stud as they are on the rsice course Barculdine gained equal fame by his doings as a stallion to that which In had previously secured on the race course Among his progeny for example were Sir Visto Derby Mimi One Thousand Guineas and Oaks Marco Morion Wolfs Crag and Dumbarton The last four were success ¬ ful in big handicaps Sir Visto sired a number of good winners but Wolfs rag and Marco were greater stud successes The Wolfs Crag branch of the Harcaldinc family is going particularly strong at present in Australia where his son Linacre has headed the list of winning stallions for the last two years The Marco division of the family is worthily represented here by Beyio Neil Cow and Marcovil dead among others and looks like catching on in the United States when Omar Khayyam takes up stud duty Several of Marcos sons were sent abroad Malua going to Germany where he achieved some success as a stallion and the castiron Mark Time to France where I believe he was nut to siring halfbrcds Marcovils best son Hurry On will no doubt keep up the best traditions of his line by means of his young stock which however will not be yet as his his first crop of foals are only duo next season seasonECLIPSE ECLIPSE AND HEROD HERODMeanwhile Meanwhile the Melbourne Matchem line is well represented among the leading stallions of the past season of which Beppo finished seventh with the New Oaks heroine My Dear as his star performer backed up by Chapel Brampton The first six stallions are all of Eclipse descent As was also the case last year dead and gone Bayardo stood first thus putting the family of Newminster once more at the top of the tree where it so fre ¬ quently stood in the late seventies and ejghtics by aid of IlCfnilt seven tihies in succeisslon at the head of the stallion list Lord Clifden and Hamp ¬ ton each of which was once the premier sire The Cyllene branch of Bend Or has two representatives in the leading ten Polymelns like last year finish ¬ ing second and Bridge of Earn tenth Orby which traces to Bend Or via Orme stands fifth The family of St Simon as usual makes a good showing by aid of St Simons son Chaucer whose total winnings were only about 500 iiounds less than those of Sunstar also a descendant from Blacklock but via Speculum instead of Galopin which thus occupied the third berth The house of Isonomy also finds a place in the first ten by aid of Swynfords sons and daughters of which Stony Ford was unlucky in being disqualified for the Oaks while Ferry secured the One Thousand The third great family that of Herod has two representa ¬ tives in Roi Herode eighth and his son The Tetrarch ninth and it is on the cards that The Tetrarch will GO closer to the lead in the course of the next year or two Vigilant in London Sportsman
