AMERICAN RECORD CUTTING How Speed Has Increased in Racing During Forty-Five Years. Record Performances in this Country and Their Makers Since 1893. Continuing the compilation of early American records at regulation flat distances published in Daily Racing Form of December 5, here is the first of three or more articles showing how these records have been reduced. The early array of figures brought the American records down to 18S0. The present compilations carry on from that time to date, and show reductions as they have been achieved, embracing the performers, their ages, weights carried, place and date of performance and times recorded. The first article covers all regular flat distances between one-quarter of a mile and one mile. The second, to be published when space permits, include all regular flat distances from one mile to four "miles. A. third of the series will embrace straight course performances and those of heat races, which of late have unhealthily fallen into disuse. The irregular and infrequent distances have not been tabled, for the reason that their records are without sharp value. Quarter of a Mile. Utile, Galveston.
