ST BERNARD WORKS IMPRESSIVELY LOUISVILLE Ky AprH 9 The most impressive workout at a mile of any of the locally trained Derby candidates was witnessed yesterday morning when B J Brannons St Bernard witli Earl Pool in the saddle covered a mile in a fraction better than 143 and cooled out in fine condition The colt was under good restraint all the way and owner Brannon who is directing the colts training afterward declared that there was no question in his opinion that the son of Ivan the Terrible and Beatrice K will be able successfully to run the Derby route As a matter of fact he added I would prefer that the Derby distance were a mile and a half for at that distance I believe his chances would be much better Mr Brannon is sweet on St Bernards chances and makes no at ¬ tempt to conceal his confidence in the geldings ability to win winThe The work of schooling the twoyearolds to the barrier at Churchill Downs has been commenced and the youngsters are now receiving their first les ¬ sons how to behave when lined up for the start J E Maddens big band are conspicuous and behave themselves remarkably well
