HAVANAS MOST SUCCESSFUL MEETING Last Winters Racing at Oriental Park Best In the History of the Course HAVANA Cuba April 17 A digest of the statistics of the winter racing season tliat came to a close nt Oriental Park on Sunday April is convincing evidence that the 191819 meeting was by long odds tlie most successful since tin sport was introduced in Cuba several years ago agoExactly Exactly 100 days of racing was had and the sport was conducted along highclass lines at all times and all interests cooperated to keep it free from scandal While a great many riders were more or less severely disciplined in osly one case was it necessary to inflict the extreme pen ¬ alty against an owner ownerThe The class of horses engaged in the racing was better than in previous years as is indicated by the number of new track records established during the meeting In the 100 days six of the fourteen old marks were lowered and two were equaled Four times during the seaspn horses ran three quarters of a mile in 111 R reat that had not been accomplished since 1915 These horses were Orestes High Gear Giis Schcer and Sirocco Si ¬ rocco also equaled the five nnrt a half furlong mark of 105 105In In the twoyearold division new records were estabished for the quarter and half mile distances J J Timmermans Dr Hall and A H Diaz Azurita both covered tlie quarter in 22 while Azurita and Kay Spences Plain Bill each covered the half in 4S The other new records are a mile in 138 by the Williams Bros James a jnile and an eighth in 151 by M ixwensteins Barney Shannon a mile and threesiTTeeiitbs in 158 by J T Wests Tippo Sahib and a mile and a quarter in 205 by B Barbers Lytje LytjeOne One of the gratifying features of the racing was the great improvement shown by many Jiorses over their performances in the United States Tlie bene ¬ ficial effect of the Cuban climate was noticeable some horses regaining long lost form while others came here maidens to leave with established repu ¬ tations WISE MANS GOOD SEASON SEASONWise Wise Man f he property of the Armenia Stable Tolon Fernandez was the largest stake win ¬ ner of the meeting capturing tlie Christmas and New Years Handicaps the two earliest stakes and winding up a prosperous season by winning the Havana Handicap on March 1C this being the last of tlie early closing events A II Dinz Orestes though not such a big money winner as Wise Man performed in a manner that caused many td rate him as the best horse in Cuba Under the careful training of William McDaniel this son o Tracery coining to hand a little late won the Morro Castle Handicap in which hfuequaled the threequarters record Later Orestes carried 123 pounds and Was beaten a neck by Deck mate in the President Menocal Handicap at a mile and a quarter and a week later carried 124 pounds to be beaten si head for the Independence Handicap at a mile and an eighth the winner breaking the record by running tlie distance iii 151 With a little racing luck Orestes might have won both these races and a successful campaign is antici ¬ pated forbim in the States the coming season G Holmes Smart Money was another in the front rank He started only once and then carried 118 pounds to victory in the Carnival Handicap running the mile in 138 The same owner also has perhaps the best of the threejearolds in Fleeing Sheik winner of the CubaAmerican Hanr dicap Fleeing Sheik carried top weight of 121 pounds and won by a neck with the consistent Tetley from the F D Weir stable in third place Frank D Weir had his share of success in stake events winning the Antilles Claiming with Fort Bliss the Oriental Park with Tetley the Carib ¬ bean Claiming with Belle Roberts and also sending W E Applegates Hamilton A to the post to win the Marianao Handicap HandicapAmong Among the horses developed which are likely to shine in any company are M Lowensteiiis Barney Shannon and iCleek The former won the Inde pendence Handicap in record time and had worked sofast that he was favorite for the Havana Han ¬ dicap in which he threw his boy and ran away Cleek which had been a failure on American tracks won many races at ill kinds of distances W E Feuchters Sidles Knob was another horse to make a notable record by winning six handicaps at short distances and carrying 13G ppunds to vic ¬ tory on one occasion E L Fitzgeralds Sirocco made the best showing of the sprinters winning several races and equaling two track records Toward the end of the season both Kay Spences Hodge andE K Brysons MUkmaii came to hand and ran races which placed them in the first flight flightKay Kay Spence had an unusually successful season as did Frank Weir Senor A H Diaz was re ¬ markably successful with his twoyaerolds win ¬ ning eleven out of seventeen races Murray was the bright particular star of the jockeys and had no serious opposition after Dreyer left here
