CALIFORNIA RACING IS COMING Strong Preliminary Work Being Done to Cultivate an Immense Industry SAN FRANCISCO Cal May 10 A quiet move ¬ ment of much importance to racing is steadily growing all over California It is not likely to show results during the term of the present legis ¬ lature which is peculiar and antagonistically un ¬ certain when sport is concerned But it is expected that the next legislature will be of different com ¬ plexion and likely to be in favor of moderate racing and mntuel betting for both thoroughbred and har ¬ ness horses The breeding interests are thoroughly in accord Thoroughbred breeding is increasing in a broad way and its men are insisting that with an quality of racing sires and dams California is su pcrior to Kentucky for the raising of their produce The success of the Spreckels stud at Napa and the Cebrian establishment at San Jose are modern ex ¬ amples to which they point pointSuch Such men as A K Macomber J H Bosseter A II Spreckels Edward Cebrian and J H Itcnshaw are active in their advocacy of the restoration of racing Their plans are for short meetings spring and fall and not to exceed fifteen days each in the larger down to six days for the moderatesized cities DiegoFew between Sacramento and San Diego Few people in the east thoroughly comprehend how many cities there ait in California large enough to patronize and enjoy racing Here is a list of such cities San Francisco Kan Diego Stockton Santa Harbara Fresno San Mateo Visalia Acntura Santa Itosa Los Angeles AngelesSacramento Sacramento SacramentoSai Sai Jose JoseSai Sai ta Cruz CruzSai Sai Iternardino IternardinoItakersficld ItakersficldSai Itakersficld Sai ta Ana AnaSai Sai Luis Obispo ObispoEureka Eureka Jjany of these towns are in uenseiy populated districts from which to draw people peopleIt It may be surely predicted that it is only a ques ¬ tion of a short time when racing will again flourish in California and it is as certain that when it again comes back the sport will be put in good hands and sturdily and intelligently safeguarded
