SIR BARTONS NEXT ENGAGEMENT BALTIMORE Md May 10 The next important stake engagement of Commander Ross Kentuckv Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Sir Birton is the 5000 Withers Stakes to be run at Belmont Park Saturday May 24 The Withers is for three yearolds exclusively and is at the distance of one mile It is an oldestablished fixture of eastern racing having been first run at Jerome Park in 1874 and continued to be an annual feature there until 1890 when it was transferred to Morris Park In 1905 and since then it lias been decided at Bel niout Park ParkFor For this years running of the Withers ISO nomi ¬ nations were made and after declarations eighty three remained eligible to start Besides Sir Bar ¬ ton such as Eternal Dunboyne Vindex King Plaudit Tereiitia Sweep On Lord Brighton Star Hampton Koutledge The Wanderer Uncle White Elfin Queen Pride of India Cerinus Hannibal and others are among the probable starters in the Withers The shorter distance of one mile may give some of these young horses a l etter chance against the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner but the majority of those who witnessed the Ross colts sterling performances in the two big Kentuckv and Maryland races are convinced that Sir Burton can beat them all at any distance
