LILLIAN SHAW IS BEATEN Kentucky Oaks Winner Races Gamely but Loses to Two Buford the Winner with War God Second Madras Ging ¬ ham Wins in Close Finish LATONIA Ky June 16 There was some capi ¬ tal racing at Latonia this afternoon and a big assemblage was there to witness it The main fea ¬ ture of the card was the sixth race a dash of mile in which the speedy Kentucky Oaks winner Lillian Shaw was pitted against some older horses of well demonstrated prowess She ran a game race but the going was detrimental to her chances and in a close finish Buford proved the winner by a short length with War God second a half length Iwfore the filly Hendrie and Jas T Clark also started but were not near at the finish finishThe The track was slowed up by a rainfall but fairly good time was made in all the races racesBagpipe Bagpipe and C Hobinson proved a winning com ¬ bination in the opener the G L Blackford repre ¬ sentative earning an easily achieved victory over Bonstelle while the favorite Cane Kun bled after going a quarter and was pulled up upThe The Hyde Park Purse furnished an interesting struggle the winner being in doubt until the last few strides Madras Gingham and Kiku two of the least considered in a speculative way putting up a grand stretch battle the former prevailing by the smallest of margins Legotal the most fancied by the public wns third the going proving her un ¬ doing after a brief display of early speed speedBy By Golly from E K Brndleys stable made his opponents iookchVap in the sCcoluPrace leading by a wide margin from start to finish cantering past the judges eight lengths in advance of Ace of Trumps his nearest competitor competitorAtta Atta Hoy II was another overwhelming choice in the fifth race but any chance he had went glim ¬ mering through the poor ride he received from Dreyer The winner turned up in Spring Vnle which enjoyed a clear lead for the entire race Dreyer was suspended for five days by the stewards for rough riding having jammed the other starters excepting Spring Vale soon after the start anl nearly causing a fall fallThe The filial downfall for the public came with the defeat of General Ilaig which was repeatedly interfered with and Lunsford held Thurber on Dixie Carroll to blame for most of the interference In this race Dreyer was again an offender by his rough tactics Thinker being a sufferer suffererThe The downfall of favorites continued this afternoon and most of the large attendance at the track returned home much saddened and lighter in pocket as a result of the many and frequent upsets The exception was Dodge which staged a comeback under the able and painstaking care of J It Res pess vlio bought the horse last year while he was at the II P Headley farm in a broken down condition The horse went amiss two years ago at Saratoga and A K Macomber his then owner had him sent to Beaumont Farm where Dodge was mated to several marcs Resuess since becoming his owner has patched him up to a point where none of his old ailment is visible and lie showed a star performance this afternoon by racing into a good lead soon after the start and showing the way to the others for the entire way winning in 145 jf an excellent performance for a mile and a sixteenth over the dull track Dodge cost Mr Itespess 1500 and his part of the purse today liialed nearly that sum His owner backed him himtensively tensively in addition If he continues to train as well as he has lately Dodge will prove a trouble Koine factor for the best of them here
