LOOKING INTO THE HORSE EPIDEMICS LATONIA Ky Juno 10 One of the most prom ¬ inent horsemen at the Latonia track one who makes a study of horses and their condition is of the opinion that most of the epidemics which many times sweep through entire stables at a race meeting is due to the condition of the soil In the stalls Ho argues that this soil after a years use Incomes foul and is a breeding place for various disease germs Ho believes this soil should bo re ¬ moved every spring all the stalls properly fumi ¬ gated and new fresh soil put in its place Nearly every year an epidemic of some kind sweeps through tho stables and this horseman argues that when one horse becomes afflicted it Is better than even money that all or at least a majority of tlio horses in the stable will become similarly afflicted The Thoroughbred Horse Association has taken tho mat ¬ ter up with tho various race track managements and they will work out a plan to relieve those conditions if they find that has most to do with horses illness Probably it would be Just as well if tlio soil is thoroughly drenched witii a strong dis ¬ infectant just prior to the beginning of each race meeting If this will bring about the same condi ¬ tions it would IK less burdensome on the association for it would be some job to bring soil from afar and replace twelve or fourteen hundred stalls In fact it would take a small aniiy of workmen to accomplish the task in a month However if conditions are improved and horses health is it stake the matter should be looked into thoroughly
