FLORIDA RAID GETS EGRET PLUMES PLUMESFederal Federal game wardens recently found several thousand dollars worth of egret plume at Miami Fla hidden in an old suitcase which had been cleverly hung up behind a bureau The law pro ¬ vides that any person found with an egret in his or her possession shall be liable to a fine of 500 or six months imprisonment or both As is well known plumes can bo found on herons only during tin period when they are laying their eggs and rearing their young Consequently the killing of one of these birds at this period means that the young will be left to die or that eggs in the nest will never be hatched Since these birds aro ex ¬ ceedingly rare now protection must be afforded them or they will become extinct If every humane and selfrespecting woman would feed her vanity in some other way than by wearing these beautiful plumes there would be no incentive for the greedy violators of the law to contribute to the extermi ¬ nation of these rare birds
