ETERNALS GREAT VICTORY Repays Owners Faith in Him by Winning Brooklyn Handicap i iPurchases Purchases Misbehavior at the Post Proves His Undoing An ¬ other for Man o War NEW YORK N Y June 23 Aqueduct re splcndant in its new paint and improvements enter ¬ tained a record week day crowd to witness the Brooklyn Handicap the chief attraction of the inaugural days program of the Queens County Jockey Clubs summer meeting Eternal running to the form his owners have believed him capable of justified their confidence by winning the historic event in easy fashion Starting fast near the out ¬ side Schuttinger kept him close to the fast pace ¬ maker LErrant until rounding the turn where he assumed the lead He held it easily at the end Purchase caused his many backers uneasiness during the delay at the post He broke the barrier and meed himself wellnigh into exhaustion during the six minutes delay When the start came he was pinched back though he quickly recovered and raced into a contending position on the outside and clear of the general crowding caused by the play for positions in the first quarter His effort was a remarkable one at the weights The third three yearold to finish in the placed division was Ques ¬ tionnaire which showed a splendid effort under his light weight in tlie stretch run He was one of the neglected outsiders in the speculation Star Class after his misbehavior for a few minutes during the post delay was taken to the outside rail to start from there Boniface and War Cloud were two of the most unfortunate during the early run ¬ ning While Purchase was raising his antics at thetjiost therewas a scurry to hedge by his backers and many of them were forced to accept five to one against his chances chancesThe The outcome of the Brooklyn Handicap indicates that the threeyearolds of the year arc much su ¬ perior to the other horses in the handicap division Mr McClelland and trainer Patterson received many congratulations over the victory of Eternal a colt which has filled nearly all his engagements and has not dodged any of his competitors since the opening of the Hot Springs meeting Eternal was quiet in the puddock and was trained to tlie hour The time of the race shows a wonderful performance The first half was officially timed by Air Odom in 45 seconds and the fiveeighths in 58 the three quarters in 111 and mile in 136 Eternal when stripped for the race reminded oldtimers much of his maternal grnndam Rcelarc which made a fortune for Henry Warnke a Coney Island railroad switchman who bought her for a few hundred dol ¬ lars She was the greatest mare of her time and when mated with Hanover produced Retained II yliifh in turn was tlie dam of Hazel Burke Pur ¬ chases performance was strictly highclass and his meeting with Sir Barton in threeyearold events to Ite decided at this and other points will be awaited with eager interest interestUntil Until some of the reported cracks from the Whit ¬ ney and Coe barns recover from the influenza that has retarded their training Man of War will be considered the best twoyearold of the eastern racing season after todays victory in the Hudson Stakes Though his opitosltion was comparatively mediocre he overcame them in such convincing fashion conceding much weight to all of them that he holds the crown temporarily at least Lnftux his rider assured of victory eased him up slightly in the final forty yards of todays con ¬ test testKILTS KILTS IIS REMARKABLE VICTORY VICTORYKilts Kilts II scored a remarkable victory in the fifth Virtually left at this post his supporters groaned nnd then were surprised to see Butwcll pursue his opponents with him Following the inside rail closely he sicured a fortunate opening in the final sixteenth where the pacemakers were tiring and got through to win going away at the end endExpressions Expressions of horsemen after the Brooklyn Han ¬ dicap wore unanimous that Purchase is a great horse lie fought for every inch of ground he covered said Andy Blakelcy For the first half mile he was in a jam after wearing himself out at the post In the last quarter of a mile where he had cloar sailing ho fought as only a good race horse will fight answering every question Loftus ut at him to the last ounce I think more of him than I ever did after his game struggle in tlie last eighth This was practically the opinion of ex ¬ perts throughout throughoutSam Sam Hildreth was satisfied with tlie race Pur ¬ chase ran I think he would have beaten Eternal if he had received a good start as he would have taken a lot out of him But lie cut up badly at the post and was bumpod around in the early part of tlie running I would like to have won and I am going to give Purchase a few barrier lessons to make him behave Though Purchase was beaten I am satisfied with him himEdward Edward Sims the owner of Eternal along with J W McClelland was at the track to see his noted black colt win the Brooklyn I have a small wager on him said Mr Sims before the race and if Purchase argumentKim boats him it will be after an argument Kim Patterson the trainer of Eternal was satis ¬ fied that Ills horse would beat all In the race but Purchase He is a good horse today and the track Hiiits him to the letter said Mr Patterson At tho difference in weight lie has a rare good chance to beat llildrctlis colt in fact I dont know if there is a threeyearold out which can give Eternal twelve pounds and beat him himCharles Charles F Grainger one of the leading lights in the new Kentucky racing organization paid his first visit to the cast
