THE PORTER NOT BADLY INJURED Mr McLeans Great Horse the Victim of Bad Biding at Latonia CINCINNATI 0 June 23 The injury sustained by The Porter as a result of his fence Jumping after the loss of his rider In the Enquirer Handicap will prevent his further engagements for this term of Latonia racing A badly swollen knee and a per ¬ ceptible limp and general soreness resulted from his striking the top rail He also did damage to his nose when lie made a bad landing At first his injury was regarded as serious for it was with difficulty that he could be cooled out but Sunday he began showing improve ¬ ment and no serious result is now anticipated anticipatedThe The Porter this year has had more than his share of bad luck and bad riding has been re ¬ sponsible for most of his failures The suspension of Lunsford just before the running of the Enquirer Handicap left trainer John F Schorr without the services of a competent jockey Schorr telegraphed to Schuttinger and other capable eastern riders but each one sought had engagements for Saturday and it was a case of choosing between T Murray and Simi son or not starting The Porter Simpson was thought the better post boy and as The Porter had drawn the extreme outside position Simpson was given preference At the time that Simpson was unseated The Porter was literally flying His great speed would have carried him into the lead immediately but just when his supporters were growing jubilant ho was suddenly lost sight of The Porter is a small horse and the loss of his rider caused the others in the field to hide the mishap The Porter was later noticed galloping leisurely toward the grandstand and he continued around the turn Many expected that he would pull up of his own accord and it was a big surprise to them that this usually placid colt should sud ¬ denly run wild and attempt to jump the fences fencesThe The running of Saturdays Enquirer Handicap will probably result in a revision of its future con ¬ ditions and a change in its distance to a mile and a sixteenth at least The starting of big fields on this track at a mile is fraught with danger on account of the close proximity of the turn It is impossible to avoid crowding when the horses are rounding the bend and some serious falls have hap I ened at this point The valuable prize offered in the race coupled with the fact that it is a handi ers their owners figuring that if they can avoid tlie inevitable jam on the first turn and get into the clear they will not necessarily need the best horse to win In Saturdays rncc41ie three placed horses Courtship St Bernard and Dodge were the only ones not affected by interference
