SARATOGA CUP A FAMOUS OLD RACE Stars of Other Days Among the Winners of this Noted longDistance Event of Saratoga Racing NEW YORK N Y July 15 Always one of the outstanding features of tlie many important and valuable stake events of the Saratoga season the Saratoga Cup has within the past few years be cause of the agitation for more longdistance rac ¬ ing regained much of its old time popularity popularityIt It was established in 1S 55 and the distance was two and onequarter miles Kentucky won its first running and repeated his victory the follow ¬ ing year Longfellow was its winner in 1871 and tried for it in 1872 but finished second to the noted Henry Bassetr which in turn was beaten a year later by Joe Daniels The following year 1875 saw a dead heat for the race Springtmk and Preak ness finishing on equal terms and dividing the stake Parole duplicated Kentuckys feat of winning the Cup twice in succession his victories coming in 1877 and 1878 General Monroe did likewise in 1SS3 and 1881 These three are the only double winners of this noted longdistance race raceAmong Among the later day winners are such noted horses as Los Angeles Blues Africander Beldame Caugh riawaga Olambala Itoamcr Friar Rock and Omar Khayyam Johrcnwon tlie race last year Roamcr being his only opponent opponentFor For this years running of the Cup Sir Barton is the only formidable threeyearold not included among its eligible while practically all the stars of the older division are named for it At tliis date there is every prospect of one of the largest fields going
