LORD GLANELYS FINE ASCOT RECORD RECORDThe The remarkable performance of Lord Glanely in winning exactly onequarter of the twentyeight races on the Ascot program last week set me wonder ¬ ing whether it constitutes a record I should fancy it does but it would occupy a week or more to ab ¬ solutely determine the point In meditating on the matter my thought naturally reverted to 1867 when the Danebury establishment was in the zenith of its fame and if Vauban had won the Derby as he probably ought to have done the Marquis of Hastings would have been within measurable dis ¬ tance of achieving his great ambition and break ¬ ing the ring I fancied that the marquis might have approached Lord Glanelys feat at the Ascot meeting of 1867 but on turning to the Racing Calendar I found that his only winners were Lec ¬ turer and Lady Elizabeth the former winning the Gold Cup and Alexandra Plate and the peerless filly cantering off with the New Stakes Still those races enabled the marquis to practically re ¬ cover all his losses over Hermit in the Derby as he won 250000 over the Cup and 100000 over the New Stakes while it is quite certain that he did not allow little Lecturer the trusted Danebury retriever to run unbacked for the Alexandra Plate At Stockbridge in that year there were thirtythree events of which the marquis won nine a slightly higher percentage than that of Lord Glanely though all things considered the latters performance was the better of the two London Sportsman
