IRISH ELEGANCE MEETS A REVERSE Following his signal triumph in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot Irish Elegance was started in the Empire Stakes at Newbury in the following week and gave tiis admirers a shock by finishing third to Roideur and Best Born The race was at three quarters and he carried 143 pounds to 115 on Roi ¬ deur and 105 on Best Born As Irish Elegance was at 7 to 4 on there was natural disappointment but the general disposition was to assume tliat Ire had not recovered from the effects of his severe race in the Royal Hunt Cup one critic writing As one who never lays odds I may look upon the defeat o Irish Elegance as being less of a sensational epi ¬ sode perhaps than it appears to others I was in a measure prepared for it when he went down to the post for he showed little of the life and spark which had been part of the spectacular treats he afforded visitors to Manchester and Ascot
