BEN BRUSH A STAR PERFORMER Brambles Fast Son Won Over 65000 in Three Seasons pa the Turf Ben Brush to the present generation of racegoers is best known as the sire of such good horses as Broomstick Sweep and Von Tromp while they themselves after their racing days were over have gained additional fame in the stud But Ben Brush was something more than a successful stal ¬ lion He was a sterling racer during his brief but brilliant career on the turf His twoyearold career began at Louisville May 7 1895 when he beat Captive Concession and two other youngsters for a purse at fiveeighths of a mile A week later be won the Cadet Stakes at the same track in heavy going defeating Del Coronado Ben Eder and three more at four and a half furlongs His next start was for the Harold Stakes at Latonia June 6 which he won carrying 121 pounds from Nim rod 111 The Dragon 111 Semper Ego 113 Ramiro 113 and Fasig 110 all good colts Then he won the Emerald Stakes at Oakley defeating Ramiro Ben Holladay and two more and the Diamond Stakes beating Ben Eder Prince Lief The Dragon and Sir Vassar In all these races he was the property of Brown Dick Taken east after the close of the Oakley meeting he won a purse at Sheepshead Bay and the Holly Handicap at Graves end and was then bought by M F Dwyer For the latter he won six races in succession the Pros ¬ pect Handicap at Gravesend the Nursery Stakes Albany Stakes and Champagne Stakes at Morris Park and two purses SENSATIONAL VICTORY IN KENTUCKY DERBY DERBYHis His first start as a threeyearold was for the Kentucky Derby which he won by a nose in a great struggle with Ben Eder with Semper Ego third in 207 Then in the Schulte Stakes at a mile he ran a dead heat with the crack filly Lady Inez and defeated her in the runoff Traveling to Oak ¬ ley he ran third to Prince Lief and Ben Eder in the Oakley Derby but revenged himself by de ¬ feating Prince Lief Loki and Ramiro in the Buck ¬ eye Stakes running a mile and an eighth in 153 4 with 122 pounds up At St Louis June 20 127 pounds each he ran second to Prince Lief for the 20000 National Derby which was transferred from Hawthorne to the St Louis Fair Grounds because of the temporary suppression of racing in Chicago Prince Lief only won by a nose Ben Eder was third with Ramiro Argentina II Don Carillo and Captive unplaced It was a great race and its time for a mile and a half 234 was never equaled over a St Louis track At Latonia June 25 over a heavy track he won the Latonia Derby yrith Ben Eder second Lokl third and Semper Ego and How ¬ ard Mann unplaced He was unplaced in his last two races of the year the Fall Handicap and a purse at Sheepshead Bay BayIn In his first start as a fouryearold Ben Brush ran second to Premier for a purse at Gravesend then beat Belmar The Swain and two more fast ones for a purse at a mile These races were his preparation for the Suburban of 1897 He carried 123 pounds was favorite at 2 to 1 and won under a pull by threequarters of a length from The Winner with Havoc third The race was run in 207 and Belmar Lake Shore Sir Walter Volley Semper Ego and Dutch Skater ran unplaced He was then twice defeated but won the Brighton Handicap from The Friar and Volley Beaten in the Midsummer Handicap at Saratoga by Sir Walter and Havoc he came right back and won the Citi ¬ zens Stakes from Clifford Howard Mann and Tra ¬ gedian Clifford being the favorite at 4 to 5 Sub ¬ sequently he won the Omnium Handicap at Sheeps ¬ head Bay defeating Hastings Clifford Ben Holla day and three more the First Special at Gravesend from Hastings and Requital the Second Special from Ornament and wound up his career by run ¬ ning second in a sensational race for a purse at a mile and a sixteenth to the Himyar twoyearold Plaudit He was in all respects a hghClass race horse and his record was as follows Ben Brush b h 1893 by Bramble Roseville Year Age Sts 1st 2d 3d Unp Won 1895 2 1C 13 1 1 1 21397 1896 3 S 4 1 1 2 25775 1897 4 16 83 3 2 18045 18045Totals Totals 3 40 25 5 5 5 65217
