SOUTH AFRICAN BETTING TAXATION At the annual general meeting of the Durban South African Turf Club the proposal that the two and onehalf per cent tax on the winning bets of bookmakers and punters should be abolished was negatived Last year this tax brought in 80810 of which the greater proportion was donated to patriotic and charitable funds The clubs revenue from the totalizator was 264283 and in the dis ¬ cussion to abolish the two and one half per cent tax on winning bets the chairman mentioned that this sum was the contribution of the small punters and the big punter paid only 80810 through the bookmaker The club had twentyseven days rac ¬ ing during the year and distributed 285385 in stakes
