YEARLING SALES ATTRACTING MANY Big Prices Predicted for the Choice Offerings Erickson May Ride for H P Whitney BY ED COLE COLESARATOGA SARATOGA SPRINGS 7f Y August 5 The yearlings sales which begin tonight have been the magnet to draw many of the oldtime owners as well as the present generation to Saratoga David Gideon came on from New York last night to be present and will remain for a day or two after lie has looked over the young stock on the market Mr Gideon breeds his own racing material and rarely buys beinfj satisfied to be represented in a modest way though his name will go down in American turf history as owner of winners of many of the richest stakes ever decided Three Futurities are recorded to his credit with His Highness The But ¬ terflies and Requital The Butterflies was the first filly to win this historic event It Is one of the pleasures of my existence to look over a band of yearlings said Mr Gideon and that is what has brought me to Saratoga Only those who have bred thoroughbreds realize the pleasure there is in watching them grow up to a racing point and the further delight of watching them strive to win great stakes As Shakespeare reminds ns In Ham ¬ lets soliloquy Tis a consummation devoutely to be wished Speaking of the sales in the near future Mr Gideon only voiced the opinion of many others who know of such things that some of the choicest will bring exceptional prices owing to the scarcity of good horses and tiie extraordinary purses which art now being offered by the racing associations associationsLTTCK LTTCK WITH WHITNEY FILLIES FILLIESAlbert Albert Simons has had exceptional luck with the Whitney fillies this year I think I have won ten or eleven straight races said he after Truly Rural had won yesterday I know few have got ¬ ten away that I went after and it looks as if there are more to come Truly Rurals victory was somewhat of a surprise to me but I know she is a good filly and will win races in fact she may even be better than I have thought her Pan ¬ oply Cobwebs and Truly Rural arc a pretty fair trio to be in the same shed shedR R H McCarter Potter is a visitor for a few days and like Mr Gideon steps up to the Spa to look over the yearlings Mr Potter breeds a few of his own and races them for the enjoyment he derives as well as the outdoor exercise and the congenial racing associations associationsThere There is a possibility that jockey Erickson will soon be attached to the Whitney stable There has been some talk of a deal between Gene Lutz Ericksons contract employer and James Rowe Frank Robinson recommended Erickson before he died as a coming rider and a good exercise boy He was given his first mount oh Truly Rural and brought the filly home Mr Lutz believes further negotiations will be forthcoming forthcomingJohn John Sauford today served a luncheon prepared for nearly three hundred guests invited to Inspect his collection of yearlings to be sold on Thursday It is needless to say nearly every prospective pur ¬ chaser was present presentIt It is probable Sunny Slope one of the few good handicap horses belonging to The Beach Stable will be seen in a race in the near future The horse is rapidly recovering from his hoof ailment ailmentCudgel Cudgel will be out again about the middle of this meeting He was sent fast this morning for a quarter of a mile which lie turned in 22 seconds
