NEWS FROM THE LOUISVILLE FIELD Horses in Plenty There All Doing Well and Pro paring for Fall Work LOUISVILLE Ky August 5 The yearling crop at the local tracks is about normal this year George J Long has the largest number in his stable at tiie present time seventeen and a few more are yet to come Most of these are of the progeny of Sain and they are a goodlooking band As has been the case for many years past they were bred at Bashford Manor Mr Longs farm and with a possible few exceptions they will all be raced by their owner ownerF F J Kelley of Chicago Whose horses are being trained by George Land has a quartet of good looking yearlings in his barn lie has a bay colt by Luke McLuke Little Oasis another of the same color by Vandergrift Little Gretchen and two fillies one bay anil the other black by Peter Quince All of the Kcllcy horses have summered well and trainer Land expects them to continue the good work next autumn that they began last spring springJ J W Johnson who won a Dominion Handicap with tliegood mareFlora Fina and an Independence Handicap at Latonia Avith Milton B the latter setting a new American track record for one and threesixteenth miles Is reentering racing on a small scale but he hopes to expand his operations ere winter rolls around He has purchased Moun ¬ tain Girl a trpyearoia daughter of Martinet Anna L Daley from Williams Brothers and from T M Murphy lie bought two yearling colts both of the progeny of Golden Maxim The dam of one is Gouin and of the other Evelyn Doris DorisMr Mr Murphy is ispoMhg of all Of his Golden Maxim products this season and next year will find him With few twoyearolds not only those sired by this stallion but others as well racing in his colors He recently purchased a new farm on the Shelby ville pike a short distance from this city at a eportcd price of JI40000 and he has already taken possession of it Since he sold the Waldeck place to C Bruce Head he has been living on a leased farm hot far from the one which he now owns ownsOne One of the bestlooking yearling colts on the Murphy place Was bought by J C Milam and it is said that he gave 3500 for him He is by Golden Maxim Yankee Tree and is therefore a halfbrother to Lady in Black a good filly owned by the Pastime Stable StableTwo Two more Golden Maxim yearlings are to bei found in Joseph IJmensettcrs barn a bay filly and a colt of the same color The dam of the former is Lady Tanchita which Umensetter raced with much success years ago while Little Nell foaled the colt All of the horses In the Umen ¬ setter establishment seem to have benefited by their rest this summer especially Sam Frecdtnan the Bashford Manor S takes winner which was badly cut about one of his legs at Latonia His injury Is mending steadily and his trainer expects him to be a formidable factor in the autumn racing at all thrcd tracks tracksDan Dan iehari1 has a yearling brother to Alex Jr In his barn the colt being by Ballot Bronzewing He also lias a yearling colt by Seth Rosering and this a halfbrother to Easter Flower 5 filly which wdn on the last day of the recent Latonia meeting These two colts have been sent an easy eighth in 13 His third yearling is a filly by Ralph Marty Lou MARJORIE HYNES IS RECOVERING Marjorie Hynes which finished third in the Cin ¬ cinnati Trophy to Cotton Blossom and By Golly has been on the ailing list suffering from a severe cut on one of her legs She sustained the injury upon the occasion of her first victory but it did not seem to bother her so much until after the running of the Trophy race It is doubtful if she will be ready for fall racing although C C Van Meter her owner is working hard to that end endJockey Jockey Jimmy Groth was a recent arrival front Empire City Where he went following the close of Latonia He is engaged in exercising horses for trainer Tom Munford and Pete Coyne CoyneDr Dr C C Cann Lexington veterinarian came down to look after the wants of a couple of horses at Churchill Downs He goes to Helena Ark August 10 to fire Flyaway ji marc acquired by J L Solomon last spring All of the Solomon horses in charge of traiiier Dan Wbhiclilbrff were ent to Helena their owners home to rest for the summer summerJazz Jazz a twoyearold chestnut gelding by Hoots and Saddle Autoliiie owned by G P Mattingly weathered a severe case of influenza and will soon be in active training again Dr Lewis Ryans track physician at all of thi Kentucky Jockey Club courses was renomiiiatcd for his scat in the Kentucky legislature at the recent primary elections William Shields wellknown eastern owner arid trainer and former jockey spent a few days here in quest of racb horses biit like at Laxingtoh he found prices high Shields said that New York has nothlug oh Kentucky when It comes to asking for plenty of money for thoroughbreds thoroughbredsC C J Brocknilllcr stopped of here cn route from New Orleans to Latonia where his horses are quartered He reported that much money is being spent for improvements at both the Fair Grounds and Jefferson Park and the people of the Crescent City are anxiously awaiting for the time to roll around when the thoroughbreds will be back in their midst again againTrainer Trainer Richard Brooks is rapidly getting Belli solar back into her best form again and the cut which she sustained at Latonia is healing Schultc McMeekjn owners of this filly wilj nominate her in a number of the stakes on the Kentucky circuit this fall especially those over a long distance of ground as she has always shown a tendency to run her best at such distances Brooki has two yearlings in bis establishment a chestnut colt by Little Dutch Eland and a bay filly by Dick Welles Penalty
