HORSEMENS MEETING AT SARATOGA Against Devonshire Acquirement and Second Race Track at afrana SARATOGA SPRINGS N Y August 12 if em ¬ bers of the Thoroughbred Horse Association met Sat ¬ urday night at the United States Hotel No par ¬ ticular significance attached to the gathering of horsemen It was pursuant to a resolution intro ¬ duced at the annual spring meeting held in Lex ¬ ington authorizing a sort of gettogether con ¬ ference with a view for open discussion of mat ¬ ters pertaining to the welfare of the turf and a general exchange of ideas ideasThe The minutes of the directors meeting of July 7 were read to the horsemen and it was shown that a proposal to the Thoroughbred Horse Association to acquire an option on the Devonshire truck near Windsor Ont was disapproved A proposal that the Thoroughbred Horse Association indorse the building of a second track in Havana also met with similar disapproval disapprovalMuch Much has been said recently about the Devon ¬ shire track having been secured by the Thorough ¬ bred Horse Association but in a Statement made by Bradley Wilson at tonights meeting he announced holding an option of severityfive per cent of the Devonshire track stock stockHorsemen Horsemen who raced at Thorncliffe and were ex pelled from the Thoroughbred Horse Association for participation in the meeting were restored to good standing and can rejoin the Thoroughbred Horse Association in the regular way wayThere There was a good attendance at the meeting in ¬ cluding seven directors president Major C Mc ¬ Dowell and secretary T B Cromwell Nothing weighty developed in the informal discussions ex ¬ cept the taking over of the Havre de Grace track and ambitious plans for that course which were made known by E F Sims who tocether with Thomas C McDowell and Richard Reid Rogers is the voting trustee for the majority stockholders were attentively listened to toDuring During his discourse Mr Sims said that control of the Havre de Grace track was purchased by members of the Thoroughbred Horse Association with the sole idea of instituting a better racing atmosphere and to put the sport on a higher plane planeROADS ROADS AND INSTITUTIONS TO BENEFIT BENEFITAside Aside from adequate stakes and purses that would be offered to horsemen it was the intention of the new controllers to divert much of the earnings to good roads and public institutions that depend mainly on outside assistance In this way it would create an interest from persons who look down on racing but because of the laws governing the distribution of funds of incorporated companies this feature will have to be abandoned for the present We can however put the earnings back into stakes purses and improvements that will make for the comfort of the patrons he said saidIn In line with the policy of increased prizes it was announced that while no stakes will be featured next fall horsemen will not fare badly who will strive for purses at the track as it Is the intention to give away 9000 daily and 15000 each Saturday No purse will be of less than 1000 value and there will be five daily for this amount and two races daily of 2000 value On Saturdays there will be five races with the minimum 1006 purse value anil two races each of 5000 falue Horse men were invited to subscribe to the stock and the request met with ready response from many of those present It matters none how little of this stock Tyou subscribe for said Major McDowell who requested stock subscriptions for the control is vested in powerful financial interests But it is the moral support of every horseman that we de ¬ sire It is intended that every subscriber receive an adequate return on his stock investment liut the yield will not exceed ten per cent centMemlfcrs Memlfcrs of the Thoroughbred Horse Association have one thousand twentysix and onehalf shares of a total of two thousand shares of stock in the Havre dc Grace truck The stock is valued at 250 a share shareThe The following new members were elected at a directors meeting held after the adjournment of the regular meeting E F Sinus Houston Tex J G Loiper Jr Philadelphia Pa W B AVatkins Wcstowii Pn F M Taylor Brooklyn N Y C K Mather Philadelphia Pa J II Patterson Lexington Ky B L Squires New York N Y P A Clark New York N Y B B Jones Bristom Okla Montfnri Jones Bristom Okla J L Murphy Philadelphia Pa G II Bull New York N Y W K Harrington St Louis Mo R P Marshall Pitts ¬ burgh Pa Paul Connelly New York N Y Frank Obernier Brooklyn N Y Francis C Bishop Mt Kisco N Y
