DOWNCAST OVER MAN 0 WARS DEFEAT Jockey Loftus Tells How the Great Colt Was Beaten in Sanford Memorial Stakes SARATOGA SPRINGS N Y August 15 The defeat of Man o War in the Sanford Memorial hit jockey LofUis hard It stung him to the core and made him the most downhearted person at the course For lialf an hour after the race he sat by himself in the jockey room moaning over the colts defeat and it was with difficulty that any one even Mr Riddle could get him to comment on the race raceIm Im too mad to talk about it he said When pressed lor a statement he said Man o War was beaten at the start but lie would have overcome that defeat if I hart had better luck I ran him into a pocket and because of his heavy burden of 130 pounds I was afraid to take him back and around the outside outsideI I anticipated an opening next to the rail on the turn out of the backstretch and again at the head of the homestretch but every time I was fooled The leaders didnt run wide and my procrastination in the stretch caused me to fail to overcome the handicap Mr Pettingill handled the colt at the barrier barrierIf If I had taken him to the outside an instant sooner lie would have won for lie is the earnest and most courageous horse I ever rode He would have caught Upset in a few more strides and would have gone on a half mile farther if I would have urged him to toMr Mr Riddle and Louis Feustel the trainer were disappointed over his defeat but they were not angry They are good sportsmen and attributed the defeat to the fortune of the sport They did not criticize the starter or jockey They praised Loftus and did their mightiest to cheer him up Mr Riddle seemed as proud as ever of his colt and enthused over his great race He told all of his friends Man o Wur would have established a new record if he had received a good start
