SALES BREAK ALL RECORDS Horses Sold at Saratoga Realize Handsome Sum of 763000 Two Hundred and TwentyFour Yearlings Disposed Of for 601700 BY T K LYNCH LYNCHSARATOGA SARATOGA SPRINGS X Y August IS I dftnt know where the twoyearolds arc coming from to fill the selling races next year remarked in owner the other day whose string is made up of platers The fields certainly will not come from those 10000 ones they have been selling up here nml if you look through your catalogues you will find that a big majority of tlie youngsters sold were purchased by a few men and at what the ordinary horseman considers a prohibitive price priceA A perusal of the sales shows that 224 yearlings were disposed of for 001700 or an average of 208109 This of course is a little higher than the horseman who is not in the business for pleasure cares to pay for a yearling and the result is that few of this class of owners secured any material for twoyearold races next year Their only hope is the fall sales in Kentucky and there is sure tobe keencom petit ion for the youngsters dip dipwn wn there Then again tfief tfiefe e slioufd be n stronger die7 mand than usual as racing is certain to come back on the big circuit in Canada next year There is talk also of a new track being built in Buffalo and the possibility of other new points opening up w the outlook for next year is encouraging and horsemen who look ahead will be anxious to provide themselves with material for twoyearold races racesThe The sales here were really remarkable The horses disposed of realized the handsome sum of 703000 The consignment offered by the Short Grass Stud realized the largest average 9020 They were a mixed band the offspring of Short Grass and Suustar The Ultimus yearlings were most eagerly sought after and tiic eight colts and fillies of this sire brought a total of 09500 or an average of 8087 The sales were the greatest over held in this country and with the large purses being offered by the different racing associations there is no reason why the standard set should not be permanent permanentThe The Futurity run at Belmont Park is increasing in value every year and with the proposed 100000 Futurity in Maryland the price of yearlings is bound to go up again Then again there is the 50000 Latonia Championship Stakes in Kentucky and any number of 10000 added stakes so the possibilities of a highclass horse are really great greatETHEL ETHEL GRAY PROMISING FILLY FILLYThere There is a filly which will not be a maiden long said a close observer the other day after watching the running of the Spinaway Stakes To my mind she will beat those that finished in front of her when they stretch the distance out a bit and bar accidents she will be a hard nut to crack in some of the stakes run next year The filly he had reference to was Ethel Gray by Hes ¬ sian Sweet Marjoram which ran in the colors of Montford Jones She ran what was really a remark ¬ able race closing an immense gap after getting away poorly and running on the outside half of the track the entire race She is a big longstrid ¬ ing tiling and when she gets settled down for a straight run she fairly flies fliesBilly Billy Hayes was a visitor here Saturday lie rame up to take in the sport and renew old ac ¬ quaintances In his day Hilly Hayes was with ¬ out a peer as a gentleman rider The writer never will forget a ride that Hayes put up on a little steeplechaser called The Rat against a horse ridden by Dr Campbell a gentleman rider from Canada It was through the Saratoga field and it was a ilingdong affair all the way with Hayes finally1 landing his mount winner by a short margin marginT T O Keene who brought the Ultimus Tsarina yearling to the sales ring here will leave tomorrow He
