SARATOGAS PROGRAM FOR THIS WEEK Grab Bag Handicap Grand Union Hotel Stakes and Merchants and Citizens Handicap Features SARATOGA SPRINGS N Y August 18 The Grab Bag Handicap at threequsrters of a mile for twoyearolds of the first class which is to be decided tomorrow the Schuylervllle a handicap at fire and a half furlongs for twoyearold fillies which will be run on Thursday and the Grand Union Hotel Stakes the Merchants and Citizens Handicap and the Beverwyck Steeplechase will be the outstanding features of the coming weeks rap ¬ ing The Mohawk a selling race that will be Tun today the Sarnnac Handicap which will be run on Wednesday are mere fillers fillersThe The greatest immediate interest is in the Grab Bag which is an event of the sportsmanlike charac ¬ ter of the Saratoga Special in that the nominators go in it blind and race practically for their own money The Grab Bag became a Saratoga fixture in 1014 Its quality as an attraction is indicated by the character of the youngsters that have won it Its first winner was Trial by Jury which was a good class horse as a two ami threeyearold no matter to what depths of depravity he may have sunk l cforc the government took him over for use ¬ ful service at one of the remount studs Broino a brilliant son of Broomstick and Leayonara and a brother of Leochares was the Grab Bag winner of 1915 and Broino ivas rated as good a Richard T Wilson was successful with Jack Hare Jr a youngster he ieased for the occasion The leasing of Grab Bag runners is permitted under the conditions Last year Billy Kelly scored liis most brilliant twoyearold triumph when he shouldered 135 pounds and won the Grab Bag from Sweep On whose burden was 120 pounds Cojonel Liyingston 118 Tetlcy 107 and Lord Brighton 121 Billy Kellys Grab Bag victory was the most astonishing performance shown by an American twoyearold since Hamburg shouldered 135 pounds and won the Great Eastern Handicap of 1897 at Sheepshead Bay BayHAN HAN 0 WAE FOB GRAND
