FOUNDATION HEADS 0FTH0R0UGHBRED Origin, of the All Pervading Lines of Breeding Through Eclipse, Herod and Matchem. ni Every thoroughbred now in the world belongs to u one of three great lines founded respectively by tl the Darley Arabian, Bycrly Turk and Godolphin ai Arabian. These lines are not known by the names of these foundation horses, but by the names of their close up descendants Eclipse, Herod and V Matchem. These were all extraordinarily prepotent sires and in the course of time theirs have absorbed all other lines of breeding that were in being in their times. All were nlso great race horses, Eclipse in particular. He was never beaten and of the three lines his is predominant at this day. Eclipse was bred by the Duke of Cumberland, as also was Herod. He was foaled in 1704 and was given Ids name because of a total eclipse of the sun on the day of his birth. lie was not raced until five years old. He was an invincible, and nothing ever got near him in his races. Sent into stud service in 1771, his progeny in twenty-three years won 90,235, an enormous aggregate for that time. Ho was twenty-three years old when he died February 20, 17S7. He was a bright chestnut in color and from every point of consideration -was a marvelous creature. His pedigree was as follows: f"rlcy Arabian rBartIetts C1,iIdcrs"-Bctty Lccdcs f Squirt... He -was himself a superior race horse. He won his first five races, three of which were matches for 1,000 guineas a side. He was sent to the stud in 1770 and for a time outbred even the great Eclipse and, in the course of nineteen years his progeny won 1,007,525 in money, seven cups and forty-three hogsheads of claret. They believed in "something on the side" in those days. He died in 17S0, the same year that his grandson, Diomed, won the first Epsom Derby. This Diomed was brought to this country and founded a great family, of which the perfect flower was Lexington. Through Diomed and the other famous Herod horse Glencoe, there is more Herod blood in the United States than in England. As was the fashion then, he was 1 not raced until he was five years old. He won six great races, such as were run at that time, and was not beaten until ho was seven years old. He went into the stud in 1759 at a fee of five guineas, which was increased to ten in 17G5, twenty in 1770 and fifty in 1775. His line today is the weak- est of the three, but is reviving in England.
