MUDLARKS DAY AT LATONiA Heavy Downpour Changes the Track into Heavy Going, i - Peace Pennant Captures the Main . Race Narrowly Herald Provides a Surprise. i LATONIA, Kj, October 9. Changed track conditions, favoring the most sturdy mud runners, brought in its wake many upsets in todays racing, but llie sport did not suffer, for finishes were close in the main, and the early action in eacli race keen. Todays attendance was considerably augmented by advance visitors to witness the decision of tne Laioma Cnampionsnip Stakes next Saturday. Betting action was on a par with the best former days. The early morning rain drenched the track thoroughly and was responsible for numerous withdrawals, but left the various fields sizeable enough. The feature race, in which the best of the two-year-olds here met, furnished a brilliant struggle, with leace Pennant winding up the winner by a scant head from Angon, the pair fighting it out strenuously through the last three-sixteenths. Honolulu Boy siiowed improved form in the going and won the opening race easily from Lady Rachel. The latter was a pronounced favorite and was none too well managed by Robinson, in addition to meeting some interference as a result of jockey G roths action on the winner. Lariat proved best of the dozen bad maidens that started in the second race and won in a canter. Lady Luxury provided an upset by keeping in the van of Lady Fair Play for the entire distance of the fourth race. The latter was a pronounced choice. Herald, racing to his best "form and also helped by the going, held sway during the entire mile, dash that . brought out some fairly useful ones. Bullion landed second place. Hocnir had to be withdrawn from this on account of ineligibility. J. Cmensetter won his first Kentucky victory this fall when Ruby scampered home in front of her opponents in the sixth race. Incidentally it marked the first victory scored by Robinson this week. Interest in the coming Latonia Championship Stakes is becoming greater as the time approaches for its decision. Mad Hatter and Chasseur, the two easterners that will start in it, were given mile and a quarter trials today. Mad Hatter accomplished his in 2:13 and Chasseur in 2:23 hard held. Jockey .T. Oroth wc suspended for the remainder of the meeting by the stewards for rough riding in the opening m.sh. He was held to blame for interference to Lady Rachel. This is the third offense mid punishment for Groth on Kentucky tracks this year. G. I. Bryan, Jr., who is extensively interested in the Jefferson Park track, will be an arrival tomorrow and do some missionary work for his association.
